Here is the latest in our year-long look at one cool comic (whether it be a self-contained work, an ongoing comic or a run on a long-running title that featured multiple creative teams on it over the years) a day (in no particular order whatsoever)! Here‘s the archive of the moments posted so far!
Today we take a look at the first story arc in Incredible Hercules, “Against the World,” by Greg Pak, Fred Van Lente and Khoi Pham!
This storyline picks up where World War Hulk left off, with Hercules and the young genius Amadeus Cho on the run from SHIELD after their efforts to aid Hulk during World War Hulk.
Hercules is willing to try to work things out with SHIELD while Cho wants to bring the agency down (he blames SHIELD for the death of his parents). Eventually, Hercules changes his mind after SHIELD sends the Mighty Avengers, including Hercules’ longtime foe (and half-brother) Ares after him.
Ares decides to spray hydra blood in Hercules’ face, which drives Hercules insane, thus giving Ares the perfect pretext to take down his old enemy.
Ares has some very notable (and very cool) scenes during this storyline. Here’s one of them (from last year’s cool comic book moments….
Later on, in another cool comic book moment, Van Lente, Pak and Pham do a brilliant job with Hercules’ hallucinations, showing him viewing Black Widow (of the Mighty Avengers) as she appeared when she and Hercules were on the Champions together…
That’s a great scene, no?
In any event, after he escapes, Hercules next has to vie with his own comrade, as Cho is dead set against taking down SHIELD, so Hercules has to stop him while still vying with that pesky Ares.
The whole arc is available in softcover and it’s well worth a read – fun action, good humor and great artwork.
