A Very Batman Christmas – Good Ol’ St. Nicholas

#17 on the countdown is “Good Ol’ St. Nicholas” from The Batman Adventures Holiday Special #1, by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini.

The story is an adorable tale about Harvey Bullock and Renee Montoya going undercover as a mall Santa (and elf). They are there to stop a gang of juvenile shoplifters.

I’ve read this story numerous times and it was only JUST now that I realize that Timm drew Ralphie from A Christmas Story into the first page of this story. How neat!

Anyhow, we see the softer side of Bullock when he makes nice with the daughter of a crook that he had put away. I love stories that show Bullock’s soft side. He works best as a character when he IS vulnerable like that. As it turns out, though, the “gang” of shoplifters were actually drones created by Clayface.

Now Bullock and Montoya were outmatched, but luckily Barbara Gordon was there doing some shopping, so Batgirl quickly swung into action (following an adorable sequence where she gets changed in a dressing room).

The fight ends up outside and Batgirl realizes how to save the day.

It is a short story, but a charming one by the two main creative forces of the Batman: Animated Series.
