A Quiet Place Part II has achieved unprecedented domestic box office success for a movie released theatrically in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

According to Variety, A Quiet Place Part II grossed $48 million over its three-day opening weekend, the biggest domestic bow for any title since the pandemic began, beating out the $32 million debut of Godzilla vs. Kong for the honor. It's also the biggest domestic opening weekend since the $58 million premiere of Sonic the Hedgehog 15 months ago.

Additionally, the A Quiet Place Part II opening is only 4% behind the opening weekend of the original A Quiet Place, which debuted in April 2018. On top of that, A Quiet Place Part II is projected to gross $58 million through Memorial Day. This would put its four-day haul on par with the lifetime domestic box office gross of the last major blockbuster to debut domestically exclusively in theaters, Tenet.

"A Quiet Place Part II is the first domestic release this year to cross the threshold from 'great opening weekend given the pandemic' to 'great opening weekend, period' -- offering undeniable proof that the domestic box office is back," said IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond. "The film's stellar results give the box office a strong jolt of momentum heading into the summer, and the many blockbusters that held out for an exclusive theatrical release stand to benefit."

Written and directed by John Krasinski, A Quiet Place Part II stars Emily Blunt, Djimon Hounsou, Noah Jupe, Millicent Simmonds and Cillian Murphy. The film is now playing in theaters everywhere.
