A Quiet Place Part II and Cruella ruled the box office this Memorial Day weekend, breaking theatrical records and indicating a return to normalcy following over a year of lockdown due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

John Krasinski's sequel to A Quiet Place Part took home the crown for the long weekend, earning $58 million from 3,726 theaters and breaking a pandemic-era record. This is in line with what the film was projected to make in March 2020 before it was delayed by the coronavirus. Its worldwide total currently sits at $80.5 million, including close to $15 million from China.

"We're happy for the industry," said Chris Aronson, president of domestic distribution at Paramount Pictures, the distributor of the horror film. "We're happy for movie theaters. This is a referendum on the future of moviegoing, so there's a lot to celebrate." The movie is also Certified Fresh with a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and currently holds a 94% audience score.

Disney's Cruella came in second place $26.5 million from 3,892 locations. The 101 Dalmatians prequel is also available on Disney+ Premier Access for $30. The House of Mouse previously released Mulan and Raya and the Last Dragon simultaneously on Premier Access and in theaters and plans to do the same for the upcoming Jungle Cruise and Black Widow. Worldwide, Cruella has grossed $42.6 million.

Rounding out the top 5 were Spiral ($2.77 million), Wrath of Man ($2.75 million) and Raya and the Last Dragon ($2.7 million).
