A Month of Comic Book Sites – Mechanistic Moth

All throughout June, I’ll spotlight a different web site about comic books.. Like with the month of independent comics, the month of LGBT comics and last month’s month of webcomics, I figure I will let you comic book site/blog owners out there suggest your comic book web site (or blog) for spotlight during this month. So if you want me to spotlight your comic book site, drop me a line at!

Today we look at Mechanistic Moth, which is a general pop culture site, but there’s enough comic book related content that it still deserves a place here.

Elliot “Mechanistic Moth” Sawyer has appeared on Comics Should Be Good a few times, including his hilarious Superman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles team-up that appeared in a Reader Art Gallery here. Kelly has also mentioned his rant about J. Scott Campbell’s drawings of fairy tale characters titled “J. Scott Campbell is Ruining Your Fairy Tales.”

Anyhow, probably the major feature on Mechanistic Moth is “1000 Things We Hate,” where Elliot and the other contributors to the site, Monique and Lilian, well, point out 1000 things that they hate. I’ll share with you their comic book-related choices…

Love Triangles (highlighting the Archie/Betty/Veronia love triangle)

Elliot also has a recurring feature called Super HeroiHOT, where he ranks female comic book characters on a rating system:

for female comic book characters and their attractiveness (as characters). Typically, the higher scores represent female characters who, in my opinion, further the positive, non-sexist portrayal of women in the comic book form. The characters who are near the end of the list typically are there due to following the stereotypes of sexism in comics among many other things.

Currently, Storm and Michonne from Walking Dead are tied with the highest score.

Here is a collection of reviews – once you get past the initial Pokemon discussion, there is a bunch of comic book reviews by a variety of reviewers, including a lot of female readers.
