Every day this month I'm going to feature a current comic book art "star," someone whose work I absolutely love.
I'm mostly going to try to keep from the biggest names as much as possible, because, really, do I need to talk more about the awesomeness of JH Williams, Frank Quitely and Darwyn Cooke? Here's the archive of the artists mentioned so far!
Here's an artist responsible for one of the most impressive comic book adaptations around!
Raina Telgemeier has been working as an artist since graduating with her MFA six or so years ago. Her biggest project to date has been her absolutely brilliant adaptations of the Babysitter's Club novels.
Telgemeier has what I suppose you would call a traditional comic strip artist style. She is basically like a cross between Lynn Johnston and Bill Watterson, and the result is a cartoonish yet absolutely on the money storytelling style.
Here is a one-page story she did as a guest fill-in for Tyler Page's Nothing Better...
I think the best way to demonstrate her skills is to just show you this short story she has on her website (GoRaina.com, check it out now!) -
By the by, wasn't the STORY in that one really good, too?
Anyhow, I believe Raina is finishing up her last BabySitter's Club adaptation, so expect to see new awesome work from her on original projects!
I, for one, can't wait!
In the meantime, check out the archives of her (currently on hiatus, but there's a lot of back story available) neat web-comic, Smile.
