A Couple of Cuckoos is one of many delightful rom-com anime series found in the Spring 2022 season, and it explores totally different themes than Kaguya-Sama: Love is War or Aharen-San is Indecipherable. Instead, A Couple of Cuckoos is all about the value and true meaning of family.

Many anime series make it clear that "family" can be anything from a traditional nuclear family to a found family such as the three Forgers to the baby-swap scenario found in A Couple of Cuckoos, hence the series' name. Recent episodes helped push this inspiring theme to the fore, mainly where the sisters Erika and Sachi are concerned, and Nagi is there to help.

How Erika & Sachi Redefined True Family In Episode 5

Episode 5's events depict Nagi working his hardest to bring his foster sister Sachi and his new fiancée, the spoiled deredere Amano Erika, together as family. In that episode, Nagi decided to invite Sachi into his and Erika's temporary household to make her feel more welcome and prove that she is not a third wheel or an unwanted outsider. Sachi had been struggling with insecurities about all this, fearing that she was losing her beloved foster brother to another girl, so Nagi showed his compassionate side and reunited the biological sisters. Moreover, Sachi and Erika are more alike than they first thought.

In Episode 5, Nagi selected the power of food to break the ice between the sisters, and after some false starts, it worked. Sachi and Erika each had their problems trying to prepare dinner, but they learned to get along and help one another, especially with Nagi to mediate, and by the end, Sachi and Erika truly felt like kin. They have more than Nagi in common -- Erika and Sachi now appreciate each other for who they are, to the point where Erika insisted on giving one of her best outfits to Sachi as a gift. These girls are family both by blood and by their mutual connection to Nagi, and while they will eventually be sisters-in-law as well, true family is in the heart, and Sachi and Erika have finally reached that point. And that's just the beginning.

What This Means For Sachi's Character Arc

Erika's own character arc is mainly defined by her struggle to live independently of her family's wealth, her desire to reach a certain someone via social media and her engagement to Umino Nagi. Breaking the ice with Sachi and embracing her as a true sister reflects well on Erika, but it's even more meaningful to Sachi herself.

Until now, Sachi had nursed possessive, jealous feelings about her foster brother, resenting Erika for taking Nagi away from her, to the point where Sachi almost seemed like a brother complex-type character. However, now that Sachi and Erika are on good terms, Sachi may soon abandon those sentiments and support Erika and her engagement. If so, A Couple of Cuckoos fans might expect Sachi to act as the referee or coach in the developing Erika/Nagi engagement, discouraging them from chasing after other people.

This may reflect well on Sachi, with her being a fair-minded and selfless sister, biological and otherwise, to two people whose love lives are anything but simple. This is a chance for Sachi, of all people, to become the voice of reason and moderator in a tangled web of romance. She will soon become much more than a jealous sister or third wheel.
