A Closer Look At The Super Bowl Ad For Captain America

The eagerly anticipated Super Bowl spot for Captain America: The First Avenger has finally debuted, likely calming any concerns fans might’ve had about Chris Evans, or the way the costume or the Red Skull might look on screen.

It’s a solid teaser that does a good job of laying out Captain America’s origin before thrusting the Sentinel of Liberty, and his supporting cast, into action against the Red Skull and the forces of Hydra. But what exactly did we see in that 30-second spot? Let’s break it down:

Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) escorts frail recruit Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) to the Operation: Rebirth facilities.

I’m guessing this is where Rogers is injected with the Super-Soldier Serum.

A pre-Super Soldier Steve Rogers endures basic training.

Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci), developer of the Super-Soldier Serum and Vita-Rays, has a chat with Steve Rogers.

Chris Evans’ head on the tiny body is kind of disconcerting.

The controls for the Vita-Ray machine, which speeds up the effects of the Super-Soldier Serum.

Steve Rogers is irradiated by Abraham Erskine’s patented Vita-Rays.

Col. Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones).

The Vita-Rays do their job.

Peggy Carter can’t keep her hands to herself.

Our first look at the Howling Commandos. To Captain America’s left is Dum Dum Dugan (Neal McDonough), and to his immediate right is Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). On his far right may be Montgomery Falsworth (J.J. Feild).

Captain America in action!

Obviously an aircraft, but I’m not sure whose. It looks like a German Horten 2-29, which makes me think it’s the Red Skull’s ride.

Captain America in action again — this time on a motorcycle — against the forces of Hydra (note the logo on the tanks).

Another look at the Howling Commandos. I don’t know who the guy is on the left, but to the right of him is Jim Morita (Kenneth Choi), Dum Dum Dugan (Neal McDonough), Montgomery Falsworth (J.J. Feild), Captain America (Chris Evans) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). There’s another man obscured by Cap and Bucky.

Steve Rogers attempts to rescue the pilot (or passenger) of a submerged plane.

The surprisingly calm man in the cockpit looks like Richard Armitage, who plays Nazi (or perhaps Hydra) spy Heinz Kruger.

A flamethrower-wielding Hydra operative!

Three flamethrower-wielding Hydra agents surround the Sentinel of Liberty.

Captain America throws down with Johann Schmidt, aka the Red Skull (Hugo Weaving).

What everyone’s been waiting for: The Red Skull unmasks!

Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) and Steve Rogers test out Captain America’s shield.

The Joe Johnston-directed movie stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, Stanley Tucci, Richard Armitage, Natalie Dormer, Dominic Cooper, Neal McDonough, Tommy Lee Jones and Samuel L. Jackson. It opens on July 22.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Born during the Great Depression, Steve Rogers grew up a frail youth in a poor family. Horrified by the newsreel footage of the Nazis in Europe, Rogers was inspired to enlist in the army. However, because of his frailty and sickness, he was rejected. Overhearing the boy’s earnest plea, General Chester Phillips offered Rogers the opportunity to take part in a special experiment… Operation: Rebirth. After weeks of tests, Rogers was at last administered the Super-Solider Serum and bombarded by “vita-rays.” Steve Rogers emerged from the treatment with a body as perfect as a body can be and still be human. Rogers was then put through an intensive physical and tactical training program. Three months later, he was given his first assignment as Captain America. Armed with his indestructible shield and battle savvy, Captain America has continued his war against evil both as a sentinel of liberty and as leader of the Avengers.
