A Certain Scientific Railgun T, or season three, officially started back in January 2020, but for those who haven’t watched the new season or aren’t caught up just yet, there is plenty to need to remember from season two, also known as A Certain Scientific Railgun S.

The second season came out in 2013, which is a long time to try to remember the plot details of the series. Plus, there is a lot of helpful context that’s helpful to keep in mind as the series continues. Here are 10 things to keep in mind before starting to watch season three.

10 There Are Clones Of Mikoto

A Certain Scientific Railgun S gave a lot of details about the way Academy City works and added some new context for how to approach what happens to the characters in the city. Early in the season, it is revealed that there are other girls out and about in the city who look a lot like Mikoto, and Mikoto has been hearing rumors for a while that there are clones of her in the city. The clone theory is finally confirmed when Mikoto finds out about a series of experiments trying to recreate her esper powers in clones called Sisters. Mikoto comes to think of these clones as her actual sisters and does her best to protect them; at the end of the season, they even work together to combine their powers into even more intense electricity, introducing new characters who will likely be able to help in battle in the future.

9 Misaka 9982 Gets Killed

Part of the reason that Mikoto is so horrified by the experiments is that she witnesses the way that they’re used. Each of them has to go up against Accelerator, who is supposed to kill them in order to increase his own power. Mikoto personally sees Misaka 9982, who she has come to befriend following the discovery that she is her clone, get crushed to death during a battle with Accelerator.

This leads her on a righteous mission to discover the locations of the labs running the experiments in order to destroy them. While Mikoto retains much of her cheerful attitude, this is where she begins to grow up a bit, seeming more like she understands the evils of the world, an attitude she carries forward with her.

8 Banri And Erii Move In Together

It’s good to keep in mind changes in status quo while moving into a new season of a TV series. Just like in any series, when characters’ living situations change, it often changes to dynamics between the characters, both between the ones who are now going to live together and the ones who no longer do. In this case, Erii moving in with Banri creates a new kind of friendship for the two of them, since they’ll inevitably be closer. But it also means that Erii’s relationship with Kazari, whose apartment she had lived in before, will be different as well.

7 Introduction Of STUDY

One of the big bads of the end of the series is a group called STUDY. The students in this group are resentful of the espers, who get most of the attention and acclaim in the city, even though these students are geniuses.

So they’ve decided to make artificial espers who can compete with the natural espers. While this threat is mostly dealt with by the end of season two, this attitude about espers will likely continue into season three and shape the way that the esper main characters deal with the world.

6 Project Level 6 Shift

This storyline didn’t quite get resolved in season two, so it seems likely that it will pop up again in later seasons. Though Accelerator, the esper whose powers researchers were attempting to get to level six, which would make him the most powerful esper there was, is defeated by Mikoto and her friends, it seems likely this isn’t the last time that people in Academy City try to make espers even more powerful than they already are.

5 Mikoto Decides Academy City Is Her Enemy

Mikoto has lived and studied in Academy City for a long time, but as she tries to figure out who’s responsible for cloning her without her permission and realizes that the city itself might be behind it, she comes to the realization also that maybe she can’t trust the people who run it.

It’s the first time she seems to realize that maybe Academy City isn’t founded by good people. This change in attitude toward the place she lives will likely keep her on her toes as she continues in new stories.

4 Previous Staff Is Returning For Season Three

It has been announced that the director, writer, and character designer for the earlier seasons of Railgun have returned to work on the season three episodes. This is a great thing for fans who have already enjoyed the earlier seasons, since it means that the series will have the same look, feel, and pacing as the episodes that they have already loved and will likely follow the same sorts of tones and themes in the story arcs.

3 Third Season Is Set During Another Series

A Certain Scientific Railgun is a spinoff from the A Certain Magical Index series.

The third season of Railgun actually takes place during the second season of A Certain Magical Index and follows the same timeline, though the characters in Railgun will deal with different issues and see the events from a different perspective. While it’s not necessary to watch Magical Index to understand Railgun, it might add some context to the story and flesh out the worldbuilding.

2 Set During the Daihasei Festival

The first arc of the third season of Railgun is set during the Daihasei Festival, which is an annual sports festival that happens in Academy City. Students compete in various competitions to show off their skills in sports and athletics. Mikoto and her friends slowly find out there’s a conspiracy surrounding the games and have to figure out how it involves them. The plot also deals further with the idea of Mikoto’s clones, the Sisters, and what might have become of early versions of them.

1 No Filler Arcs

The third season has promised so far to be a more straightforward storytelling experience than earlier seasons, with no filler episodes between the more major story arcs. This is a good thing for fans, since it means that the characters will get down to business and be more focused on the action. The story will likely slowly uncover more information about Academy City and allow the viewers to get a really good look at what’s going on behind the scenes.
