WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Justice League Infinity #7, now on sale

The entire DC multiverse was at risk in Justice League Infinity, with one of the universe's most potentially powerful elements unleashed by a monstrous villain. But it turns out the key to stopping it is a fan-favorite romantic pairing coming to fruition.

The Batman and Wonder Woman from the DC Animated Universe are able to unleash the Life Equation in Justice League Infinity #7 (by J.M. DeMatteis, James Tucker, Ethen Beavers, Nick Filardi & AW's DC Hopkins). It's a fitting culmination of long-simmering romantic feelings shared between the two -- and makes their eventual fated parting all the sadder.

Justice League Infinity has pitted the DCAU version of the titular team against one of the most dangerous threats to the multiverse. Having gained a terrifying amount of power, a variant of the Amazo robot has unleashed the full weight of the Anti-Life Equation. In the process, almost the entire multiverse is blinked out of existence. The only survivors are the Earth-12 Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter. Working together, Lantern and Flash are able to buy the group precious moments. Meanwhile, Wonder Woman unleashes the Life Equation, given to her by a dying and repentant variant of Darkseid. Now possessing the Life Equation, Wonder Woman could unleash it and restore existence across the multiverse.

Martian Manhunter was able to use his telepathy to unleash the presence, but Wonder Woman could barely contain it. The sheer power was almost too much -- until Batman took her hand and offered his help. Sharing the power around each other, the essence of creation gave them the chance to survive -- at least long enough for their variant of Amazo to stand up to his alternate universe counterpart. This gave the two heroes the opening to unleash the full might of the Life Equation, effectively rebirthing the multiverse. Afterward, as the heroes celebrate their victory, Batman and Wonder Woman spend time together -- discussing their connection and holding hands.

This isn't the first time the Earth-12 Batman and Wonder Woman have been teased as a powerful pairing. Throughout Justice League and Justice League Unlimited, the pair flirted and bonded. They even discussed the possibility of a romance in the episode "This Little Piggy," with the show making it clear how much they cared for one another. But in the Post-Flashpoint multiverse, the Wonder Woman of Earth-12 was eventually forced to return to Earth-50 -- home to the tyrannical Justice Lords. There, she finally consummated a romance with a Bruce Wayne -- specifically, the Batman of that reality. Meanwhile, the Earth-12 Bruce Wayne grew old and bitter, eventually becoming the aged mentor to Batman Beyond.

The romance between the Earth-12 Batman and Wonder Woman was a quietly powerful element of that reality, and an ultimately bittersweet one. In that world, Batman and Wonder Woman ultimately couldn't find a way to cement their romance once and for all. But even if they didn't get the chance to go the distance in a long-term relationship, their love for one another at least saved all of creation. It's a reminder that their love, even if eventually prevented, was still a powerful force for both heroes. Together, the connection and hope they shared proved enough to unleash a force strong enough to combat one of DC's darkest elements. It'll be interesting to see if the Life Equation ever reappears -- especially in light of the "Great Darkness" becoming a major factor going forward.
