Mortal Kombat is back.
Tonight at the Game Awards, Netherrealm head Ed Boon took to the stage to give the award for best racing game. Before he could utter a word, the screen went black, followed by an electrified version of the dragon logo. At that point, a cinematic trailer played, showing Scorpion and an evil version of the Thunder God Raiden duking it out. And, well...let's say the victory was even gorier than it ever has been.
After the logo, there was a flash of an apparent new character standing inside a large room next to what appeared to be an hourglass. Time travel seems to be back in play with the franchise, as the Scorpion from the original Mortal Kombat made a brief appearance at the end of the trailer, defeating Raiden with a shout his classic line: "Get over here!" The last game, Mortal Kombat X, released in 2015 and was the first game in the series to come to the current generation of consoles.
Mortal Kombat XI will release on Apr. 23 for PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. The community will get a special reveal event on Jan. 17. Pre-ordering the game will get you access to Shao Kahn.
