When wrapping a project, some actors choose to permanently commemorate their time working on a film or TV show by having renditions of logos, motifs, or imagery from their roles tattooed on their bodies. Sometimes they do this as an ensemble, while others do it for their characters, making the art they receive more personal.

It takes commitment to get any tattoo, but to get one inspired by a role means that an actor had to have loved their time on set with their co-stars. Whether they get matching tattoos or solo pieces, some actors feel the need to commemorate their most memorable roles in the form of permanent ink on their skin. The result is often beautiful in meaning and visually.

Ari Aster’s second and most recent film, Midsommar, stars Florence Pugh as Dani, a psychology student accompanying her boyfriend and his friends on a trip to Sweden to experience what they believe is a Swedish Midsommar festival.

After filming ended, Pugh commemorated one of her most iconic roles to date by inking the film’s equally-as-iconic maypole – the location where her character won the title of the festival’s coveted “May Queen” – near her wrist. Many fans have gotten similar tattoos of the film’s maypole. Still, some more popular Midsommar tattoos include renditions of the film’s fiery yellow temple, and Pugh herself in her unmistakable flower dress and crown gifted by the Hårga.

Maisie Williams and Sophie Turner got their breakout roles in Game of Thrones as the iconic Sansa sisters, so it’s no wonder that they’d want to commemorate their time together on the show. The pair have matching tattoos on their forearms of the date “07.08.09,” representing the date they both learned that they had landed their respective roles as Arya and Sansa Stark.

Turner and Williams were on the show from the first episode until the eighth and final season, giving the pair another reason to want to commemorate their roles. Eight years playing one character undoubtedly leaves actors with an emotional attachment and is enough to warrant some ink after an emotional finale.

6 Five Of The Original Six Avengers Celebrated Infinity War With Matching Tattoos

The six Avengers back-to-back in the MCU's Avengers 2012 movie

To celebrate ten years together and the release of Avengers: Infinity War, five of the original six Avengers (apart from Mark Ruffalo, who sat this one out) got matching tattoos to remember the years establishing one of the most successful film franchises of all time.

The tattoo is a quirky and clever amalgam of symbols that represent each character, including an arrow for Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, a hidden hammer for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, and more hidden symbols within the tiny tattoo. While the actors were getting inked, Scarlett Johansson even tried her hand with the machine, giving their artist an, albeit poor, tattoo of her own!

5 Lady Gaga Commemorated A Star Is Born With A Huge Back Tattoo

Lady Gaga has several tattoos, many of great significance to her musical career. Following her starring role in the remake of A Star is Born, directed by and co-starring Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga had a large rose and the words “La vie en rose” tattooed on her back. The tattoo references the song Gaga’s character, Ally, sings when she first meets Cooper’s character, Jackson. Gaga’s performance of this song is what convinced Cooper to cast her in the film in the first place.

Tom Holland didn’t manage to get in on the original six Avengers tattoo since he was only sixteen when The Avengers was released. Still, he does have a tattoo of his own to commemorate his breakout role, which continues to be his most notable, as Spider-Man.

Holland revealed his tattoo, the Spider-Man logo on the sole of his foot, during Spider-Man: Homecoming press and also revealed that he had to have the tattoo gone over again twice due to fading, proving his dedication to the art.

3 The Suicide Squad Cast Tattooed Each Other

Before the cast of The Avengers got their matching tattoos, the ensemble from Suicide Squad did it first. These actors, including Will Smith (who plays Deadshot), Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), and Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), took their matching tattoos one step further by tattooing one another.

Each cast member got the word “SKWAD” tattooed on their body by another castmate before the franchise's first installment was released in 2016. However, members of the cast like Cara Delevigne (Enchantress) and Jared Leto (The Joker) seem to have sat the tattoo out.

Sansa Stark isn’t the only role Sophie Turner has permanently inked to commemorate. On her left pointer finger, Turner has a minimalist flame to represent Jean Grey, or Phoenix, for her role in the X-Men franchise. She got the tattoo after wrapping Dark Phoenix, which is her most recent appearance in her role as Jean Grey.

1 Bryan Cranston And Aaron Paul Got Tattoos On The Last Day Of Filming Breaking Bad

To celebrate wrapping filming on Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul got tattoos on their final day on the show's set by a set decorator who was also a tattoo artist. Cranston chose a small Breaking Bad logo to be tattooed on the inside of his finger, while Paul chose to get the words “no half measures” inked on his bicep; a reference to the season three episode titled “Half Measures."

It is supposedly Bryan Cranston’s only tattoo, so it’s fitting that it would come at the end of his most iconic role in the Emmy Award-winning series, and for Aaron Paul, a role that brought his name into the spotlight.
