As a live performance based medium, musical theater is a unique experience, but that experience is limited to those who can get a ticket to the show. As a result, it's rare for a musical to gain massive popularity outside of the theater world. This is what makes Hamilton stand out. It managed to garner a huge following despite how difficult it is to get tickets for the show, but that's about to change when Hamilton is released next month on Disney+.

Filming theater performances is not a new concept by any means, but it hasn't exactly taken off in the past. After all, live performances have a certain magic to them that can't quite be captured on film, but if this were to start a trend of releasing live musicals on streaming platforms or even in movie theaters, here's a few that should get the Hamilton treatment.

Hadestown

Reeve Carney as Orpheus from Hadestown

In the years since its success, many musicals have been called "the next Hamilton." While most of them aren't quite there, Hadestown comes close. Based on singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell's album of the same name, Hadestown re-imagines the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice as a folk opera. Its beautiful music, creative staging and stellar performances earned it eight Tony awards, including Best Musical. Wherever it goes, audiences fall in love with Hadestown, making it an excellent choice for wider release.

Wicked

The film adaptation for Wicked has been in the works for years but it's been delayed once again. As much as fans would love to see a Wicked movie, most would also love to see a filmed version of the stage show. The music has taken on a life of its own outside of the show, making its way into pop culture around the world. It's been thirteen years since Wicked debuted on Broadway, but this story of female friendship resonates with audiences today as much as when it first opened.

Dear Evan Hansen

Dear Evan Hansen in Boston

Dear Evan Hansen is one of the few musicals to put mental illness at the center of its story, and it gained a lot of traction because of this, along with its excellent soundtrack by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, the writing duo behind La La Land and The Greatest Showman, and orchestrations by Hamilton's Alex Lacamoire. The show won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2017. A film adaptation is currently in the works, but it's unclear when it will be released. In the meantime, the show's unique staging and emotional story make it worth seeing in its original form.

Ain't Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations

Ain't Too Proud on Broadway

Ain't Too Proud is a jukebox musical about one of Motown's finest groups, the Temptations. Set against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War, the musical details the group's journey from its inception through its many iterations. The show's stellar performances struck a chord with audiences, and in 2020, Ain't Too Proud still speaks to the moment. Plus, no one can resist the timeless music of the Temptations.

Come From Away

Come From Away in Chicago

Another musical inspired by true events, Come From Away tells the story of the inhabitants of Gander, a small town in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. After the September 11th attacks, 38 planes were grounded in Gander and the locals took care of the 7,000 stranded travelers who were dubbed "come from aways." Despite the terrible circumstances, the locals and the come from aways forge strong connections and lifelong friendships. Come From Away is the kind of musical that restores one's faith in humanity, and it would be wonderful to see it on screen.

Six

Six The Musical

What if Henry VIII's wives formed a girl group? This is the premise of Six, a musical disguised as a pop concert in which every wife gets the chance to tell her own story. Each queen slays with a song of her own and in group numbers as well. Six was a hit in London's West End and the show was about to open on Broadway when all of the theaters closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The show is fun and uplifting, and fans would love to see these queens grace the screen.

Once

Once on Broadway

Once may already be a movie musical, but the stage show is not one to miss. There's just something about watching the actors play their instruments on a minimalist set that works so well. The musical also plays around with Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová's songs, re-contextualizing certain numbers and giving the story a little more structure than the film. Like the film, the musical won several awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical. While virtual audiences wouldn't get to have a drink at the bar on stage, a filmed performance of this show could capture the mesmerizing beauty of Once.

Fun Home

Fun Home the Musical

Based on Alison Bechdel's graphic memoir of the same name, Fun Home is about Bechdel's experiences growing up as a young lesbian with a closeted gay father, who she believes committed suicide. Like the graphic memoir, the musical tows the line between drama and comedy as it explores the relationship between father and daughter. It won five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and it is the first Broadway musical with a lesbian protagonist. Like many of the shows on this list, there is a film adaptation in the works. It would be great to see this show come to the screen, especially on a thrust stage like it was on Broadway.
