Ghost of Tsushima

With Ghost of Tsushima, which saw a delay in release due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Sucker Punch Productions has set out to create an open-world game where player choices affect gameplay. Set in 1274 Japan on Tsushima Island, players will step into the role of samurai Jin Sakai during the Mongol Empire's first invasion. Outnumbered after an initial wave, which wiped out the majority of the island's samurai forces, Jin must tap into the unconventional way of the Ghost to instill fear in his opponents and stop the Mongols from launching a full-scale attack on the mainland.

Sucker Punch Productions went to great lengths to make Ghost of Tsushima historically and culturally accurate, even going so far as to send a sound crew to Japan to record authentic bird noises. Along those same lines of grounding the game in reality, Ghost of Tsushima will not feature waypoints and players get total freedom to explore the in-game world.

Marvel's Avengers

marvel's avengers

Marvel's Avengers promises a lot, including an emphasis on diversity and inclusion. In the game, the Avengers gather in San Francisco to celebrate the opening of their second facility, but Taskmaster crashes the party, destroying half the city and killing Captain America. Five years after this event, known as A-Day, the Avengers are hunted as criminals and much of the world has changed. Enter Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), who begins to discover both her powers and the truth behind A-Day as she tries to right the wrongs of history and avenge the death of Steve Rogers.

Developed by Crystal Dynamics -- who successfully reimagined the Tomb Raider franchise -- Marvel's Avengers is a narrative action-adventure, the game won't have an open world component, but it does have a sprinkling of multiplayer in key missions. It also promises to be a massive game, with DLC available for things like costume changes and free downloads down the line with new regions and characters.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

An Assassin's Creed: Valhalla image shows Eivor lead a Viking army into battle

The 12th core game in the long-running franchise, Assassin's Creed Valhalla once again has players assume the role of Layla Hassan from Origins and Odyssey. But of course, the real action is in the past. Set in 873 AD during the Viking Age, a Viking raider named Eivor helps lead his clan to settle lands in Anglo-Saxon England. Facing off against them are the kingdoms of Wessex, Northumbria, East Anglia and Mercia in a multi-year campaign across Europe. Along the way, Eivor meets the Hidden Ones and takes up their fight against The Order of the Ancients.

Valhalla boasts a handcrafted open world, the ability to choose the main character's sex and and role-playing elements, like an in-game settlement that changes according to character choices. Missions will begin and end in settlements, and they will benefit from resources the player gathers via raids. The game will reportedly also feature a return of classic gameplay mechanics from across the franchise's history, including social stealth.

Halo Infinite

After a lackluster last few installments, Halo Infinite looks to revitalize the franchise. While there's still a lot that's not known about the game, rumors say Halo Infinite will focus on Master Chief. This makes some sense, since Halo 5: Guardians' dual-leads approach, which saw the iconic mascot share playtime with Spartan Locke, wasn't particularly well received. While more information will certainly come at the Xbox reveal in July, a recent teaser trailer hinted the main antagonists of the game will be the Banished from Halo Wars 2.

Touted as a spiritual reboot, the sixth main game of the Halo franchise has a lot riding on it. Halo Infinite is the de facto flagship title of the next gen Xbox Series X. However, 343 Industries and Also, gamemaker studios 343 Industries and SkyBox Labs had to think fast when the COVID-19 pandemic struck and quickly adapt to a work-from-home workforce, so that might have an effect on the end product.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Confirmed as a standalone game by maker Insomniac Games, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the follow-up to 2018's massive hit Marvel's Spider-Man. Players will play as Miles Morales, utilizing the young hero's new, distinct powers to protect his Harlem neighborhood. However, Miles is also a much less experienced crimefighter than Peter, promising a lot of drama in that regard.

Miles Morales is somewhat smaller than its predecessor and is akin to Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. However, the game will be on PlayStation 5, meaning it's going to have some pretty significant technological upgrades, including near-instant loading, ray-tracing, 3D audio, 4D scans, improved skin shading and spline-based hair.
