COVID-19 has put most of the planet on lockdown, and Japan is no exception. While many of its decisions remain controversial, Japan has endured the pandemic with minimal casualties from the disease. This means many Japanese businesses have taken this opportunity to either reopen or begin the reopening process. If you live in Japan or are from one of the countries allowed to travel there, this might be good news for you. If you're an anime enthusiast, then this might be even better news, as several anime-themed restaurants will be reoping.

Whether you can go now or have to wait until the vaccinations spread across the world, there are numerous ways you can nerd out eating food in Japan. These six anime-themed restaurants are ready and waiting to seat you, should you take the voyage once everyone is healthy.

Pokémon Cafe

One of the most well-known anime cafes in Japan is the Pokémon Cafe. Located in Chuo City in Tokyo, the cafe offers a variety of delicious Pokémon-themed treats, with a menu available in English for tourists. While you do need to reserve seats far in advance, it's all worth it when you're treated by a massive Pikachu mascot. Dishes include the Hearty Pikachu Plate (a hamburger steak served alongside a Pikachu-shaped rice omelet) and the Eevee Teriyaki Chicken Burger.

Straw Hat Cafe - Ghibli Cafe

No, the Straw Hat Cafe is not a One Piece cafe (that comes later). This place is situated inside the sprawling Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo. Once you spent enough time wandering the beautiful displays, take a stop at the Cafe. While Ghibli movies might be famous for their lavishly-animated food, the cafe serves simple but delicious treats like strawberry shortcake. One of their more memorable dishes, however, is the Bacon Egg Castle, which is as magical and delicious as it might sound. Accompanied by the sights of the Ghibli Museum, the Cafe becomes the place of sweet dreams.

Doraemon Cafe at Doraemon Museum

The Fujiko F. Fujio Museum at Kanagawa is a home away from home for Doraemon enthusiasts. The museum contains tons of art pieces, exclusive shorts and installations tying into the iconic character's decade-spanning history. On the third floor of the museum, however, is a cafe. The place serves several delicious treats for museum visitors. The themed treats include dishes such as Nobita’s Cold Udon. It's a small eatery designed to help you pass the day at a museum paying tribute to anime history.

Cafe Mugiwara – One Piece Cafe

Of course one of the most popular anime of all time has a cafe. The One Piece Cafe is just part of the extensive One Piece attractions at Tokyo Tower, and functions as both a manga library and a fun cafe. Cafe Mugiwara provides tons of statues, a replica of Oda's writing desk, as well as the entire collection of One Piece in multiple languages. When you finish reading, however, Cafe Mugiwara also provides a lot of treats, including Luffy’s Favourite Beef Pizza, which is exactly what it sounds like.

Cafe de Miki with Hello Kitty

Cafe de Miki is a Hello Kitty cafe situated in Koto City in Tokyo. This little cafe offers affordable Hello Kitty-themed desserts to patrons and Sanrio enthusiasts. The cafe is located on the artificial island of Odaiba, which means the location is usually relatively quiet. This makes it an ideal place to visit if you still want to socially distance from other individuals while also eating treats like the Milk Cream Ribbon style Pancake -- a fluffy stack of pancakes coated in whipped cream alongside mixed berries.

Gundam Cafe

Located in the otaku neighborhood of Akihabara is the Gundam Cafe, a must-visit location. The outside of the cafe is adorned by astounding statues and displays, but inside is a sit-down cafe that serves small Gundam-inspired dishes. While the cafe, much like other cafes, is designed for a quick bite on the way, it does serve some memorable dishes like the Donut Dessert -- a green donut designed to resemble the head of the iconic Zaku mechanical heads. Do remember, however, that the cafe is famous for its crowd of otaku trying to make their way in.
