In honor of the fiftieth anniversary of Spider-Man, we're doing four straight months of polls having to do with Spider-Man, culminating with the release of the Amazing Spider-Man film in July. The last installment will deal with Spider-Man stories, but this month will be about Spider-Man's writers and artists.

25. Alex Saviuk

Alex Saviuk has a remarkable, if slightly unsung, place in Spider-Man art history. Ever since he first started on Spider-Man with a few fill-in issues of Amazing Spider-Man in late 1987/early 1988, Saviuk pretty much never left. He has been drawing Spider-Man regularly for the past TWENTY-FOUR years with no signs of stopping!

After his fill-in issues on Amazing, Saviuk eventually settled into a remarkable seven year stint on Web of Spider-Man (from #35-116). Saviuk's clean style and strong work ethic allowed him to rarely miss an issue of Web in his seven years on the title. Saviuk has particularly strong storytelling skills. For his sample page, I'm using a page of Web of Spider-Man #75 that makes me smile because of the dual Easter Eggs found on the page...

After leaving Web of Spider-Man, Saviuk drew the All-Ages Adventures of Spider-Man for a couple of years and then, in 1997, he began his current gig, drawing the Spider-Man newspaper strip on Sundays (Joe Sinnott inks). Since 2003, he has also inked the daily Spider-Man newspaper strip over Larry Leiber's pencils.

24. Keith Pollard

While Amazing Spider-Man had been in the hands of young writers since Stan Lee left the book, the artists on the title were always veterans, guys who had been in the trenches for a number of years. Steve Ditko, John Romita Sr., Jim Mooney, John Buscema, Gil Kane, Ross Andru...they each had been drawing comics for over a decade when they began working on Spider-Man. Keith Pollard was the first "young gun" to take over as the regular artist on Amazing Spider-Man, although he always worked with veteran finishers over his layouts and breakdowns, presumably to give the book a familiar feel to it (Mike Esposito and Jim Mooney were the main finishers for Pollard's run). Pollard was the regular artist on the title from #186-205 (although there were plenty of fill-ins). For a short period of time in the late 1970s, Pollard was the regular artist on Amazing Spider-Man, Fantastic Four AND Thor! Here is a Pollard/Mooney page from Amazing Spider-Man #200...

23. Terry Dodson

Terry Dodson (along with his wife Rachel) was the artist on the majority of Mark Millar's hit Spider-Man series, marvel Knights: Spider-Man. Dodson also teamed up with writer Kevin Smith to draw the long-running Spider-Man/Black Cat mini-series, The Evil That Men Do.

22. Steve McNiven

Before he drew Spidey in the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, Steve McNiven had already famously drawn Spider-Man in the pages of Civil War as that series had Spider-Man reveal his identity to the world (he soon realized that that was a bad idea and his friends Doctor Strange, Reed Richards and Tony Stark got together to re-hide it). However, when Brand New Day was launched in 2007, McNiven was chosen as the man to kick the whole thing off. He did an amazing job (as he always does). Here's a page from Amazing Spider-Man #546 where Peter Parker is asked exactly what he has been up to since he seemed like such a science prodigy...

21. Sara Pichelli

Sara Pichelli first drew Spider-Man as she joined the creative team of Ultimate Spider-Man in the issues leading up to the Death of Spider-Man assisting then-regular artist David LaFuente (they would each draw different parts of the story). Soon, Pichelli's dynamic artwork was chosen to be the part of the launch of the BRAND-NEW Ultimate Spider-Man comic book, starring the new Spider-Man, Miles Morales.

It is no surprise that Pichelli was chosen as the artist for the upcoming mini-series crossover between the regular Spider-Man and the Ultimate Spider-Man
