Movie tie-in video games have built up a reputation for being pretty terrible. Games such as E.T the Extra-Terrestrial, Fight Club, Jaws, Catwoman and even The Wizard of Oz have all received horrible video game adaptations that were essentially rushed out to capitalize on the films.

However, not every movie-based video game is terrible. Here are five that are actually worth playing.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay

A tie-in prequel for The Chronicles of Riddick, 2004's Escape from Butcher Bay is one of the best hidden gems for the original Xbox. The game which mixes stealth and action genres well, follows infamous criminal Riddick as he tries to escape the most secure prison in the entire galaxy, the titular Butcher Bay. The game boasts an all-star voice acting cast that includes Vin Diesel, Ron Perlman and rapper Xzibit.

While the movie itself received pretty negative reviews, Escape from Butcher Bay became a hit among critics and fans alike, with people praising the title's stealth gameplay and grim prison environment. Escape from Butcher Bay spawned a sequel in 2009: The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, which actually included an updated version of the first game. More than a decade later, Escape from Butcher Bay is a must-play for anyone who’s into stealth-action games.

Scarface: The World is Yours

Scarface: The World is Yours might look like a typical Grand Theft Auto clone at first, but it is much more than that. The game is actually something of a sequel to the classic 1983 film Scarface and tells the story of Tony Montana in an alternate timeline in which he survives the intense ending of the movie. In The World is Yours, Tony must reclaim his drug empire and take revenge on all the people that wronged him.

The game plays like any other GTA clone but turns up the adult content a few notches. The World is Yours is littered with F-bombs, dismemberments and drugs. Players can curse out enemies as they blow their limbs off and then go sell a few kilos of cocaine to a local drug dealer. The World is Yours is definitely not for the faint of heart, but there's a really great game beneath all the explicit material.

The Lion King

Some of the best platformers for the fourth console generation were based on Disney movies, and many of them (such as Aladdin) are worth checking out. However, The Lion King stands out as one of the best. The 1994 platformer put players in control of Simba on his journey to stop his wicked uncle Scar from taking over the jungle.

The Lion King is extraordinarily hard, even for the most skilled players. This was a result of Disney actually asking the developers to increase the game's difficulty so people couldn’t beat the game within a rental period. Although The Lion King is difficult, it is still an amazing game that is sure to give players a healthy dose of nostalgia.

The Warriors

The Warriors in-video gameplay with main cast

The Warriors is a 2006 beat 'em up that is often considered one of Rockstar's most underrated titles. Both a prequel to and adaptation of the 1979 cult film of the same name, The Warriors explains the gang's backstory and gives an in-depth look at each member, doing the source material justice in the process. Both The Warriors movie and video game adaptation tell the story of a New York City street gang framed for murdering the most respected gang leader in the city. The Warriors must escape the city before they are taken down by one of the many rival gangs gunning for them.

Filled with epic chase scenes and fight sequences like those in the film, The Warriors features a beautifully told story full of style. Any Rockstar fan will love The Warriors.

GoldenEye 007

GoldenEye 007 target screen

One of the most acclaimed video games ever, 1997's GoldenEye 007 follows the same story as the 1995 James Bond film of the same name. In the game and film, 007 must hunt down Alec Trevelyan before he activates the GoldenEye satellite to destroy London and cause a financial meltdown.

While the story was fairly standard, GoldenEye's gameplay was incredible for its time. The game featured split-screen multiplayer into which people poured tons of time duking it out on a ton of different maps. Modern first-person shooters like Call of Duty and Rainbow Six owe a major debt to GoldenEye 007, which revolutionized the genre in major ways. wouldn't be what they are today if it wasn't for GoldenEye 007. The game is a true classic that will not be forgotten anytime soon.
