True Beauty By Yaongyi

The main love triangle from the manhwa True Beauty

After being bullied in school and realizing that she won’t get a boyfriend due to her ugly face, Jugyeong Lim becomes a beauty guru, using make-up to hide her imperfections. She has many admirers but their admiration is superficial because they only like her physical beauty and nothing else. However, her perspective changes when she befriends two guys: Suho Lee, the son of a famous actor, and Seojun Han, a former idol trainee.

This series isn't just about Jugyeong trying to balance her love life and her dreams about being a cosmetologist. True Beauty teaches readers to be comfortable in your skin and that true beauty lies in your personality and soul rather than your physical appearance.

Cheese in the Trap By Soonkki

This is Yoo Jung saying sorry to Hong Sul after getting beat up.

This campus love story revolves around the complicated relationship between Hong Sul and Yoo Jung. Hong Sul excels in her academic studies, but unfortunately had to take a year-long break from school due to personal issues. Before she left, though, she got on the “bad side” of one of the popular students in the business program, Yoo Jung. When she returns, Yoo Jung, suddenly becomes “nice” to her, offering to help her with coursework and inviting her out to eat. Hong Sul becomes suspicious of him, but over time, the two eventually learn about each other and that the events that occurred in the past were just misunderstandings.

Cheese in the Trap vividly captures campus life in South Korean universities and we're introduced to multifaceted characters like Yoo Jung. Hong Sul believes Yoo Jung is cold-hearted but in actuality, he’s just looking out for her even if his methods aren’t always the best route to take. This manhwa has also been loosely adapted into a South Korean live-action series and movie of the same name.

unTouchable By Massstar

Sia tries to seduce Jiho.

Set in contemporary times, vampires evolved: all they need to do is have skin to skin contact with a human to obtain energy and satisfy their hunger. Sia Lee, a famous supermodel and vampire, becomes captivated by her next-door neighbor, Jiho,  a writer that has a severe case of mysophobia. To get closer to him, Sia makes it her mission to cure his mysophobia.

unTouchable is for fans of vampire romances such as Twilight, Devils’ Line and The Vampire Diaries. Yet rather than showcasing vampires as dark and cold-hearted creatures, this series shows them in a light-hearted manner: everyday working-class individuals that just so happen to have a specialized diet. This series was also loosely adapted into a Chinese live-action series entitled, I Cannot Hug You.

A Good Day to be a Dog By Lee Hey

Hana confesses her feelings to Seon Jin and wants to kiss him.

Hana Han’s family is cursed because of one of her ancestors' mistakes. Everyone in her family transforms into dogs if they happen to be kissed by the opposite sex. To break the curse, each family member must kiss the same person, but in dog form. After a night outing, Hana gets drunk and accidentally kisses Seon Jin, a fellow colleague. Now she must kiss Seon Jin again as a dog, but unfortunately, Seon Jin has a fear of dogs. As a result, Hana schemingly plans to help Seon Jin overcome his fear so that her curse can be lifted.

When it comes to romance manhwa set in a school, the main characters are usually students, and so it is nice to see a school romantic comedy about teachers. In A Good Day to be a Dog, the romance developing between Seon Jin and Hana is so natural -- they take their time in understanding each other’s trauma and imperfections. They are also a cute couple because they are unaware of each other's mutual feelings and are shy to express those emotions despite everyone knowing the spark between them.

Annarasumanara By Ilkwon Ha

Image shows Yun Ai and Lee of Annarasumanara at a carnival from Annarasumanara

Yun Ai has a difficult life: her mother abandoned her and her father is on the run from debt collectors. As a result, Yun Ai has to work to support her sister, all while continuing her academic studies. Yun Ai's dream is to be a “working adult,” until she meets the self-proclaimed magician, Lee, who reignites her dream of becoming a magician.

Although this digital manhwa is listed under the romance genre, there isn’t much romance happening except for Il-Deung's unrequited love for Yun Ai and Yun Ai’s slight affection for Lee. Instead, the love that is showcased in this series is the self-love that Yun Ai and Il-Deung discover within themselves. Annarasumanara delivers a fantastical and sublime story about self-discovery in a depressing society run by heartless “adults.”
