365 Reasons to Love Comics #281

We’re taking a quick two installment excursion into looking at two of the coolest comic book companies out there. The first one is a company up in Canada that began as a single anthology, and has since grown into so much more. The Archive has also grown – check it out!

281. Drawn and Quarterly

When Chris Oliveros began putting together his quarterly comic anthology, Drawn and Quarterly, in 1989, I doubt he thought he would be where he is now, 18 years later.

Founded (and still headquartered) in Montreal, Quebec, Drawn and Quarterly originally was simply an avenue to publish Oliveros’ anthology series, but the company slowly added other ongoing titles, such as Joe Matt’s Peepshow and Chester Brown’s Yummy Fur…

Eventually, Oliveros began packaging the comics into books, and soon, Drawn and Quarterly evolved into more of a book publishing company than a comic book publishing company (although it still publishes comics – just not as the sole draw).

Drawn and Quarterly is responsible for such notable series as Jason Lutes’ Berlin…

Seth’s comic work, including his latest, Wimbledon Green…

Drawn and Quarterly published Kevin Huizenga’s Or Else series, and more recently, the book collection, Curses…

Drawn and Quarterly is the home of Adrian Tomine, as well…

Also, the great Gabrielle Bell…

They also are publishing Tove Jansson’s Moomin for American audiences…

All of this greatness, and this is without even MENTIONING the work of Robert Crumb (who they’ve only added fairly recently, Guy Delisle, Julie Doucet, Joe Sacco and even some Chris Ware!!

All of this, and it all started with a small quarterly anthology.

That’s a great thing about comic books, and a good reason to love them.

Here is Drawn and Quarterly’s website, and here is their blog.
