Parents. Where would we be without them? Certainly not in their cozy basements. Heh. Happy Mother’s Day to any moms who may be reading this. I racked my brain to think up a proper Reason in honor of today. In comics, you’ve got a ton of stuff about fathers, and not nearly enough about mothers. But I think I’ve got something. It was a webcomic, and now it’s in publication. I hope this column entices you to purchase it. It’s a damn fine book.
133. Mom’s Cancer
Mom’s Cancer is the Eisner-award winning webcomic-turned-graphic-novel described by the author/cartoonist, Brian Fies, thusly: “My mother was diagnosed with incurable lung cancer. I made a comic strip about it.”
It’s a story about a journey. A terrifying, heartwrenching journey into a frightening medical landscape, a journey through the stages of a disease and the treatment of such, a journey into death. A long day’s journey into night, if you pardon me stealing from better writers than myself.
It’s a story about cancer. The causes, symptoms, treatments thereof. It’s a story of a disease from the eyes of a patient and her loved ones.
It’s a story about a family. A mom, a son, and her two daughters, forced to face the challenges of a disease.
It’s a story about a mother. It’s about her amazing strength and courage, and her relationships with her family.
It’s a story about life. Not death.
Brian Fies’ mother passed away in late 2005, not from the cancer, which she conquered, but from side effects of the drug treatment. She lived, however, to read the comic and see its successes. I’m sure she was proud of her son, but she should have been especially proud of herself.
The graphic novel is a sad, funny, and even inspirational book. It’s a tribute to a terrific mother, woman, and person.
Sorry if you found this one depressing, gang, but it’s not meant to be. To any mothers out there, or the mothers of anyone reading this– it’s because of you that we keep going. It’s in your strength that your children find strength. Thank you and good night.
