Even Hell Isn't As Scary as Maggie Thatcher

Welcome to 31 Days of Horror Comics, where I will spotlight some of the best horror comics around, as chosen by a bunch of my favorite horror comic writers and artists around!

Today's creator is Goran Sudžuka, who burst onto the scene drawing Jamie Delano's Outlaw Nation in 2000...

Recently, he drew the disturbing Garth Ennis series, A Walk Through Hell, for Aftershock...

Goran's suggestion was Jamie Delano and John Ridgway's initial Hellblazer run. Since Jae Lee already suggested the first story, I went with the next story for Goran, "Going For It," from Hellblazer #3 by Delano and Ridgway.

The issue has a brilliant Dave McKean cover...

The concept of the issue is that someone is killing yuppies in London with their own excesses, like this guy jogging to death...

We see that a demon in hell is taking advantage of the increase of greed in the wake of the success of Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative Party in London...

John Constantine investigates and finds two of the demons serving Mammon who are disguised as yuppies (as Constantine calls them, "Yuppie Soul Brokers from Hell!")...

Constantine goes directly to the head demon and offers to sell him his soul, but the demon is so wary of Constantine that he thinks that Constantine has seen polls that suggest that the conservatives might lose control of the government and that all of his souls might suddenly be useless, so Constantine succeeds in toppling the whole soul-brokering market...

In the end, Constantine succeeds, but he gets to watch as Thatcher wins another election and Constantine notes that there are all sorts of different roads to hell...

Such sharp commentary by Delano and wonderful Ridgway artwork.

Thanks for the suggestion, Goran, and congratulations for the birth of your son!
