Seth Hahne, of GoodOKBad fame, came up with this 31 Days of Comics challenge, one of those things where each day of the month you're given a different category that you then make a choice of a comic to fill that category. I thought it was a lot of fun and I did it in January of 2014 and 2015, but then the other day I thought, "It's been a while and most of the answers can be different every day."

We continue with Day 4, which is the First Comic Series You Seriously Pursued.

This is a bit of a tricky one for me. The first series that I probably actively collected every issue of was Batman (years ago, I purchased a page of original art from the first issue of Batman I bought), but I think there's a difference between actively collecting a book and the first comic you seriously pursue. When you're a young reader, you don't necessarily have the ABILITY to collect comics, ya know? You're sort of at the mercy of your circumstances. If you're parents (or some other family member) are willing to buy you comics, then maybe you can collect comics regularly. Otherwise, you're just going to have a comic here or there. However, you're definitely going to WANT that comic.

So with that in mind, I'm going to go with Larry Hama's original run on G.I. Joe

Like MANY kids in the 1980s, this was the comic book series that actively made me want to pick it up.

Of course, part of that appeal had to be those amazing Mike Zeck covers...

The comics were actually advertised on television at the time, making them even MORE attractive to the kids of the era. The G.I. Joe cartoon series was everywhere and so the comic book series was also everywhere. It was one of Marvel's highest selling titles in the 1980s. Heck, for a time, it was the HIGHEST-selling title, and this was at a time when Uncanny X-Men was selling like CRAZY, so that says a lot.

What's YOUR pick?
