WARNING: The following contains spoilers for 30 Coins Episode 7, "The Glass Box," now airing on HBO.

In HBO's 30 Coins, viewers have slowly seen Father Vergara's past unraveling, especially after it was hinted at that he did time in jail. It turned out to be due to a botched exorcism, and since then, the show has revealed he was a bit of a heretic as a priest in training, questioning the Catholic church and coming off as a rogue as he got older.

Unfortunately, after inheriting the Judas coin and bringing darkness to Pedraza in the form of the Cainites, he ended up on the run and imprisoned in Syria. But as fate would have it, Vergara has a big role to play in the holy war to come as he ends up becoming a ruthless warrior when he gets back.

Vergara was hiding out in Syria, heartbroken about Sandro's death and how he couldn't stop his old buddy, Cardinal Fabio Santoro. Unfortunately, Vergara was taken by soldiers who saw the Christian as an infidel and sentenced him to death. But as he's taken out with the other two victims, reminiscent of Christ and the two thieves on the cross, one of the soldiers turns on the rest and sets them free.

He doesn't want innocent blood on his hands, but sadly, a firefight kills everyone except for Vergara. However, by the time he gets back to the Spanish town, the demonic Father Angel has taken over. He's created invisible barriers, blocking the town in as he smokes and burns it out. He's doing this to kill the people, especially now that Merche has given him the coin, which would absolve the Vatican of their presence there.

But when Vergara crosses the border, part of him doesn't want to escape -- he wants blood. He sneaks back into his abandoned church and goes into a bunker where he has stored mysterious weapons. From knives to guns, he's blessing everything with holy water. At this point, it becomes clear Vergara knew deep down the day would come when he'd have to be a one-man army.

Angel is Fabio's partner in crime, so taking him out would weaken the cult drastically, but it won't be easy because these sinister cultists have healing powers, telekinesis, telepathy and pyrokinetic abilities. Regardless, Vergara's gone from a man of god to a soldier, and now that he finally understands the endgame, he won't hold back. He was afraid before, but Sandro's death and the fact that the town has been ravaged, particularly Elena and mayor Paco, has left him beyond reason.

Starring Eduard Fernández, Megan Montaner, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Macarena Gómez, Pepón Nieto and Manolo Solo, 30 Coins airs Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and is also streaming on HBO Max.
