LYING IN THE GUTTERS VOL 2 COLUMN 36

Welcome to the most popular and longest running comics column on the internet. In its various forms, Lying In The Gutters has covered rumours and gossip in the comics industry for twelve long glorious and quite scary years.

All stories are sourced from well connected individuals and checked with respective publisher representatives before publication. Mostly. The veracity of each story is judged by me and given a spotlight – Green is the most reliable, Amber means there’s likely an interest involved or the likelihood isn’t set and Red means even I can’t quite bring myself to believe it.

Lying In The Gutters is for your entertainment. Neither Fair Nor Balanced.

FRIAR FRIAR PANTS ON FIRE

[Green Light]

The Flying Friar ships this week. You may have heard of it.

At the bottom of this column is a list of retailers who’ve told me they’ve stocked copies for the shelves. If your local shop doesn’t have a copy or is reluctant to order you one, contact one of their rivals who should be able to supply you with a copy.

If everyone sells out (which, given the current media interest, and relatively low initial orders, is a keen possibility), I’m intending to make the issue downloadable, for cover price.

I am also doing a guerrilla signing at Gosh Comics in London. They’ve ordered a significant number of the book, I’ll be hanging around in the basement at around quarter past six, Thursday evening, in case anyone would like a copy signed. Either to be personalised, or so you can sell it on eBay to a desperate Italian.

Because this is what appeared on page five of one of the bigger Italian newspaper’s late last week.

On with the rumours.

TOKYO SLIPPING

[Yellow Light]

This week, I’ve been hearing a lot about the troubles at TokyoPop. We’ve already heard about the six redundancies and departures over differences of direction. I’ve heard a repeated version of events from a number of TokyoPop related sources and it goes like this:

Original English Manga, OEL, the name given to new works created by Anglophonic creators, rather than translated works from Japanese and Korean creators, is not selling anything like the East Asian work. The kids want the real stuff, dudes. So there’s been a slashing of that line, with repercussions on the TokyoPop shop floor.

This reduction seems to be what a number of people expected, though the official line has been to counter this impression, almost even before it’s raised. But it’s not the whole story.

This coincides with TokyoPop’s decision to publish new works in East Asia, such as the “Star Wars” license, and have succeeded rather well – which has made them a direct competitor to publishers from whom they previously licensed works for the English speaking market. And so those publishers are less keen to hand TokyoPop the keys to their cars.

So the OEL line is falling away because the kids don’t want it as much, and the translated East Asian work, which the kids lap up, is drying up. Hence the recent layoffs and disputes over direction.

TokyoPop is still a fantastically successful publisher and its ability to break into the Anglophonic bookstore in a way no other comics publisher had previously, gives it a solid base to ensure its survival, however rocky the road. Though it is getting rockier this very minute. But remember! No impending doom!

CAT GOT YOUR TONGUE?

[Yellow Light]

We know that Theresa Russell has been cast as the wife of Flint Marko, The Sandman.

But her character’s identity hasn’t yet been divulged.

It’s Felicia Hardy. The Black Cat.

Or her mother, at least.

How long until the complaints?

PRICE POINT

[Green Light]

The fanboys are already kicking off at the cover price of “52*”. Described as “an affordable $2.50 an issue” – or $130 in all. Think how much pizza you can buy for that!

Thankfully, the Countdown-similar “DCU: Brave New World” is just a dollar. Should top off the whole “Infinite Crisis” and define the emerging new DC Universe.

Any Aldous Huxley experts care to deconstruct this one?

PAUL’S ANGELS

[Green Light]

Newsarama updated their story that Paul Dini would be writing Batman (aside from the mention on Lying In The Gutters a couple of days before, with a much better headline) with info from Dini’s LiveJournal:

“I’ll be writing a ton of new Batman comics this year, along with a very special graphic novel starring two DCU darlings near and dear to my heart,” Dini posted.

Have some clues.

Two female characters.

Two characters famous for wearing fishnets.

Two…

Oh I’m fed up with clues. It’s Black Canary and Zatanna, okay? Okay.

I was in the Sunday Express yesterday you know.

BAT STABBER

[Red Light]

Some fun speculation now. Rob Potchak, and LITG reader and OYL conspiracy theorist writes:

“The blade that you see ‘Nightwing’ with on his OYL first issue cover, is the same blade that Jason Todd was stabbed with in one of the most recent issues of Batman, (only turning out to not be Jason Todd…) It also seems to be Jason’s Blade of Choice, considering Dick Grayson has always been more for the batarangs than knives.

“Just figured I’d let you in on the investigation.”

Thanks Rob! Now get back to me on any JFK theories. I still reckon it was the Riddler on the grassy knoll.

Talking of which, I’ve heard that for a while the new series “Flash: The Fastest Man Alive” was called “Jay Garrick: The Fastest Man Alive” internally at DC. Make of that, what you will…

LE SNIKT

[Green Light]

Panini Comics Italy are promoting the new French Wolverine book by Jean-David Morvan & Philippe Buchet

The full interview is here. The book is scheduled for next year’s Angloueme festival.

A ROSARY BY ANY OTHER NAME

[Green Light]

“The Athiest” is a fine comic published by Desperado/Image Comics. Created by Phil Hester and John McCrea, after issue four a new artist, Will Volley, will take over the art duties, though McCrea remains co-creator and co-owner and will return to the book when his drinking schedule allows.

But there will also be a Hollywood-friendly title change to aid those afraid to put a TV series called The Atheist on air. It will eventually be called “Antoine Sharpe: The Atheist,” just as DC did with Hellblazer and Constantine, one getting smaller while the other gets larger until they switched. The next story arc will be “Antoine Sharpe: Effigy.”

DIVERTED ROUTE

[Green Light]

Red Route Distribution, linked to the publisher Knockabout Comics, distributes non-Diamond exclusive comics to the UK market, including a lot of titles Diamond can’t, won’t or don’t get their hands on.

It appears that Red Route will be assigning their graphic novel distribution to the general interest publisher and distributor, Turnaround Publisher Services, who already distribute Knockabout books.

ABSOLUT LEAGUE

[Green Light]

Amazon USA has handily put up dates for all your Alan Moore needs. The last DC volume of the “League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier.” May for the standard hardcover, September for the absolute version. These will come with CDs featuring recordings created by Moore and others.

In May, Complete Future Shocks from Rebellion, featuring all of Alan Moore’s “Future Shocks” tales for “2000AD.” Expect a “Complete Time Twisters” to follow. And Albion from DC/Wildstorm in October.

There’s also an Absolute Kingdom Come planned for September, All Star Superman trade for September and All Star Batman for October

Time to fill up that Wish List!

(And someone make a screen grab of that Future Shocks Amazon listing: “a treasury of early stories from one of the very bust writers in the business.”)
