She added that she and co-writer Tom King enjoyed going "even deeper into the mind and musings of Jack Kirby." King echoed her recent sentiment, retweeting her message and posting that the work on their film has helped keep him "sane amidst the insanity."

The New Gods are based on the eponymous characters of the Fourth World mythology, which Kirby wrote from 1970 to 1973 at DC Comics. Duvernay has revealed that the film will focus on the superhuman escape artist Mister Miracle and his wife Big Barda, as well as other elements of the Fourth World mythology. King had previously written the critically acclaimed Mister Miracle series for DC and will co-write the New Gods screenplay with Duvernay.

Duvernay has two other DC-based television projects in the works. She is currently developing a television series based on the Naomi comic for the CW and a DMZ miniseries for HBO Max.

Outside of comic-based filming projects, she is also developing a television series for Netflix based on the life of Colin Kapernick.
