"Hate" is a strong word, but for these anime characters that have paved the way in 2020, some fans would say that word is not enough to show their disdain. 2020 has been a great year for more various anime, such as manhwa adaptions and remakes of popular series, but it has also been a year for many new characters to garner hate.

Whether they be a villain of a series, an annoying isekai protagonist, or a character that one cannot stand because they are so irritating, there is an abundance to choose from this year. Here are some of the few characters that fans have been outspoken about during this year.

Updated by Brianna Albert on September 21st, 2020: Over the years, whenever an anime character garners hate from a particular fandom, it is hard to erase it. However, 2020 has given fans a broad category of animeー as well as charactersー to hate with each new anime that debuted each season.

Some characters are hated by an entire fandom, while a specific group may hate some of them in various corners of the internet. No matter the case, some of these characters have a valid reason to be disliked and hated, while some are merely irritating and unbearable to watch for certain fans.

15 Hana Uzaki (Uzaki-chan Wants To Hang Out!)

Uzaki Laughing

Although Hana's (more well-known by her last name Uzaki) purpose as a character is to annoy Shinichi, it's presumed that she was not intended to irritate the fans actually watching the anime.

Some fans may have found her personality cute, but that appeal obviously wasn't universal — Uzaki has crossed the thin line dividing irritation and hatred quite quickly for some, becoming thoroughly disliked for being overly bothersome and outright annoying.

14 Glenn Litbeit (Monster Girl Doctor)

Glenn smiling

Glenn Litbeit is the titular character of Monster Girl Doctor and is disliked for a simple reasonーhe is a generic protagonist of a harem anime, but with a twist; every girl that is in love with him is a monster girl.

He has no qualities that stand out, although he does not have any that are horrific. The poor reception to the anime as a whole has seemed to shift into disdain for Glenn, as well.

13 Gabriel Miller (Sword Art Online: Alicization)

Gabriel Miller SAO

Gabriel Miller is the main antagonist of the second half of Sword Art Online: Alicization. As far as villains Reki Kawahara has written for the franchise, it would be easier to explain by stating he is as hated as Sugou Nobuyuki ーotherwise known as Oberon, the man who terrorized Asuna in the Fairy Dancer arc.

On top of being evil for the sake of being evil, he also assaulted Sinon in Gun Gale Online and killed his childhood friend to see her "soul" leave her body.

12 Jegal Taek (God Of High School)

Jegal Taek smiling arrogantly

Jegal Taek is a newcomer to anime, as he is a manhwa character from God of High Schoolーand one who new fans took an instant disliking to when he made his debut. Jegal Taek's arrogant and violent personality was shown when he used his charyeok Greed to devour Jeon Jugok, as well as beating up Lee Hyangdan for the sadistic fun of the action.

11 Shingo Ichinomiya (The 8th Son? Are You Kidding Me?)

Shingo alert

The isekai genre is long overrun with cliches and annoying protagonists, and Shingo Ichinomiya is no exception. While the word "hate" may be a bit strong for this reincarnated boy, "irritating" and "stale" may fit him better.

Like most isekai protagonists, Shingo has a harem, an oblivious personality, and is extremely overpowered. This is a perfect mixture for a hate-worthy protagonist, as fans are beginning to become tired of it all.

10 Kana Hoshisato (Hatena☆Illusion)

Kana and Makoto

Hatena☆Illusion flew under the radar during the Winter 2020 anime season. flew under the radar during the Winter 2020 anime season. Unfortunately, the creator of the series, Tomohiro Matsu passed away on May 2, 2016, before he could see it become a series.

Moving on to the character he created, however, is Kana Hoshisato. Most fans found fault in the anime adaption version of her, as she was upped in the "annoying" department and had a tsundere personality that most found fault in Kana.

9 Mary Hunt (My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom!)

Mary Hunt as a child

My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom was the breakout anime of Spring 2020 and served as an introduction to "otome isekai" to many fans. Although the harem Catarina gathered is full of good boys and gals, Mary has a glaringly obvious problem in her personality: obsession.

Because of Mary's yandere tendencies, her unhealthy attitude toward Catarina has made many fans abhor her as a character after the time skip.

8 Claire Aoki (Gleipnir)

Gleipnir is an interesting anime, to say the least. When one throws Claire Aoki into the mix, things get a lot more complicated. Akin to Mary Hunt from My Next Life As A Villainess: All Routes Lead To Doom, Claire takes the definition of yandere and ups it x50.

While a lot of fans took a liking to Claire and her smug smile, there was another side that could not stand her or how she represented as mostly scantily-clad throughout the already odd anime.

7 Daisuke Kanbe (The Millionaire Detective - Balance: UNLIMITED)

Daisuke Kanbe, the protagonist of The Millionaire Detective Balance : Unlimited

No one likes a rich person who does not take responsibility for their actions, and Daisuke Kanbe is one of the people. While Haru, his detective partner follows justice above anything else, Daisuke doesn't care about it at all and rather fix all of his problems with money.

He does this with each case he takes and even went as far as crashing his car to solve a case - and stating it's alright because he can just pay to fix it.

6 Tsukasa Yugi (Toilet-Bound Hanako-Kun)

Fans of Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun have a love-hate relationship with Hanako's younger twin brother, Tsukasa. While some fans adore him for his mischievous and evil ways, there are some who hate his guts for the distress he puts the main characters through for his own entertainment.

Coupled with his obsession with torturing Hanako, Tsukasa is often a recipient of fans' hatred.

5 Akito Sohma (Fruits Basket)

Akito was always hated in Fruits Basket, but the remake of the beloved shoujo series takes it up a few more notches by showing how corrupt Akito truly is as a character. While in the original series Akito was pinned for being the cause of the Sohma family's grief, fans got to see head-on how wretched Akito was during the beach episode.

Akito was shown to abuse Kyo mentally and psychically, punched Momiji, and even scratched Tohru's cheek hard enough to make her bleed.

4 Haru Nonoka (Sing "Yesterday" For Me)

Haru with her hair flowing

At the beginning of Sing "Yesterday" For Me, fans were cheering for Rikuo and Shinako to get together. Since Rikou had a crush on Shinako since college, fans couldn't help but cheer for their relationship to blossom. However, all of this went downhill on the final episode of the series when Rikuo and Shinako broke up and he immediately went to Haru to tell her he loved her all along.

This rushed ending, as fans thought they were in store for 18 episodes, confused most, and made them shift their hatred towards Haru, who frequently stalked Rikou and had no reason to like him other than her picking up something he dropped five years ago.

3 Kyubey (Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica Side Story)

Kyubey madoka magica

Kyuubey needs no introduction unto why anime fans all over abhor this cute yet devilish cat-looking creature. Kyubey forces vulnerable young girls to turn into magical girls and fight wishes as an Incubator, a species that no matter how many times you kill it, it will come back to life.

In Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka☆Magica Side Story, Kyubey is no different, although Kyubey has more of a supporting role as the characters are all different from the original series.

2 Kazuya Kinoshita (Rent-A-Girlfriend)

Kazuya Kinoshita from Rent-A-Girlfriend.

Kazuya Kinoshita is not only the boring main character of a harem anime ー he's a very indecisive one, as well. After his girlfriend Mami breaks up with him, he decides to rent a girlfriend, Chizuru. However, throughout the anime, fans have begun disliking him to the point of labeling him the worst male character of 2020.

Seeing how he wavers between the girlfriend that broke up with him for fun and the fake girlfriend who actually seems to care about him, it's no wonder Kazuya has gained many fans' ire.

1 Rachel (Tower Of God)

Rachel patting Bam's head

Perhaps the most surprising one on the list, Rachel from Tower of God is a character manhwa and anime-watchers can agree on: their hatred for her character.

The reason for the hatred toward Rachel is because of the final episode of the series where she is revealed to be pretending to be disabled in order to push Bam off the tower, betraying him after he so dearly wished to help her climb the tower.
