2000 AD and Vertigo Comics writer Si Spencer has passed away at the age of 65.

Spencer was a prolific writer for comics and television, best known for his work on 2000 AD's flagship character Judge Dredd. Alongside artist John McCrea, Spencer would write a story centered on the monstrous Judge Death. He also co-created the Harke & Burr series for Judge Dredd Magazine with Black Hammer co-creator Dean Ormston.

Spencer would write several series for DC's now-defunct Vertigo imprint, including the Hellblazer: City of Demons miniseries and Books of Magick: Life During Wartime, which reunited him with Ormston. In the world of TV, Spencer would write for the popular BBC show EastEnders and was slated to write for the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood. Spencer would later reprint his Torchwood script under the pseudonym "Webley Wildfoot" in the Torch, Wood & Peasants book in 2010.

Several of Spencer's colleagues in the comic industry have mourned his passing online. "I am in a state of shock, my old friend from way back, Si Spencer, has died... I really can't believe it..." McCrea wrote on Twitter. "He was a fantastic collaborator, a brilliant writer, and an extremely nice person. RIP Si," artist Max Dunbar added.
