'2 Guns' brought in $27.4 million in North America, making it the No. 1 movie this weekend.

In a weekend dominated by comic book movies, '2 Guns' outshot and outquipped the competition to take the No. 1 spot at the North American box office.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, '2 Guns," based on the comic by Stephen Grant and Mateus Santolouco, brought in $27.4 million domestically in its opening weekend. The R-rated action film, which stars Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington, is the first film from the BOOM! Studios catalog to make it into theaters, with BOOM! co-founders Ross Richie and Andrew Cosby both receiving executive producer credits. Grant recently shared some of what he learned during the process of making the film in his "Temporary Madness" column here on Comic Book Resources.

Marvel and 20th Century Fox's "The Wolverine" placed No. 2 this weekend, adding $21.7 million to its North American total of $95 million. Like last weekend, it continued to do well overseas and has brought in $255.2 million worldwide.

"Smurfs 2", based on the comics created by Peyo, disappointed at the North American box office this weekend, according to THR. The sequel to the 2011 film brought in $18.2 million for the weekend, with a five-day debut of $27.3 million. The first "Smurfs" movie brought in $35.6 million in its opening weekend. However, the film is doing better overseas, where it brought in $52.5 million for a worldwide total of $80.3 million.

"The Conjuring" and "Despicable Me 2" rounded out the top five, and another comic movie -- "Red 2," based on the Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner comic -- landed at No. 8. The comic industry's busy summer isn't over yet, as "Kick Ass 2," based on the comic by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., is set to open Aug. 16.
