Fans of cinema and gaming alike have mixed opinions when it comes to video game movies. Some, like Detective Pikachu, performed spectacularly well in theatres for fans of both the game franchise and movie fans alike. However, there are others such as Warcraft that just missed the mark for both types of audiences.

However, there are some video game-based movies made back in the 1990s that deserve a reboot or remake. The success of 2021's Mortal Kombat proves that reviving 1990 video game movie franchises is viable if handled properly. Some, however, should just be lost to history as time goes on.

10 Should Be Rebooted: Super Mario Bros. (1993) - An Animated Mario Movie Is Already On The Way, But Another Avant Garde Live-Action Take Could Be Interesting

Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi in Super Mario Bros Movie.

Though many fans are aware of Mario through his video games, not as many fans may be aware that there was a live-action movie called Super Mario Bros: The Movie. This film was a financial failure, with fans criticizing the lack of narrative, lack of similarity to the games, and inconsistent tone.

However, despite this failure, it slowly became a cult classic over the years. Many reviews praised the special effects, artistic direction, and performances of the actors despite all of the film's flaws. If this film received a reboot, fans hope that it will learn from the mistakes of the first film and make it even better. The franchise is already confirmed to get an animated revival, with a Super Mario film in development and slated for release in 2022. So interest clearly exists for more Mario on the big screen.

9 Should Not Be Rebooted: Art Of Fighting (1993) Was A Failure At The Time & Doesn't Have Enough Fans Today To Justify Another Movie

Art Of Fighting

Art of Fighting was an anime created and directed by Hiroshi Fukutomi, animated by Studio Comet, and produced by NAS. The film was released in 1993 and is based on the SNK fighting games of the same name. Fans and critics alike gave the movie heavy negative reception overall.

The film's failure was blamed on bad voice acting, choppy animation, illogical perspectives, and badly choreographed fight scenes. The film did so poorly that it was rated 14% rating at Meta Anime Reviews. Considering its horrible performance, this is a film best lost to time and never rebooted, especially given that the Art of Fighting game series has largely given way to King of Fighters anyway.

8 Should Be Rebooted: Street Fighter (1994) Could Follow Mortal Kombat's Lead To A Successful Modern Revival

Street Fighter Film

Unlike Super Mario Bros: The Movie, Street Fighter was commercially successful with a worldwide box office gross for approximately three times its production costs. Even though the film was panned by critics for its generally campy tone and overblown effects, Raúl Juliá's performance as M. Bison gained critical praise to the point that he gained a posthumous nomination for "Best Supporting Actor" at the Saturn Awards.

The film itself was even nominated for the Saturn Awards for "Best Science Fiction Film." Even though there was already something of a reboot in 2009 that focused on Chun-Li and her supposed origin story, it was a critical failure compared to the 1994 film. However, it's still possible that Street Fighter, if given a reboot, could garner renewed success, as proven by how well-received this year's Mortal Kombat movie has been.

7 Should Not Be Rebooted: Fatal Fury - The Motion Picture (1994) Incited Fury In Fans & Critics Alike

Fatal Fury The Motion PIcture

Fatal Fury: The Motion Picture was released in 1994 in Japan and is based on a game series of the same name, another fighting franchise from SNK. When it was released, fans and critics alike gave it a mixed reception. Despite praise for the film's artwork, the storyline was criticized for not being engaging enough.

Though it did not perform nearly as badly as the other movies that should not be rebooted on this list, it is not a film that fans consider to be reboot-worthy, due to its lack of memorability. And since the artwork of SNK's 2D fighting games has reached film animation quality at this point anyway, there really isn't much need to bother with animated movies based on any of them.

6 Should Be Rebooted: Pokémon The Movie 2000 - The Power of One (1999) Should Be The Next Pokémon Movie To Get A Remake

Pokemon The Movie 2000 James Ash Pikachu meowth Jessie

Pokémon The Movie 2000: The Power of One is the second Pokémon movie ever released. Despite its title containing "2000" in its name, this film was first released in 1999 in Japan (though it was released in 2000 in North America). Even though it had less success than Pokémon: The First Movie, it was still fairly successful in theaters overall.

Considering that the first film received a remake in 2016, it's possible that the Pokémon franchise could create more rebooted versions of their past films especially as the Pokémon game series continues to celebrate its past with new versions of classic titles coming out all the time.

5 Should Not Be Rebooted: Wing Commander (1999) Was A Massive Flop & The Game Franchise Is All But Forgotten Today

Wing Commander

Wing Commander was released in 1999 and is based on the classic game series. It was so bad that one of the actors, Freddie Prinze Jr., admitted that he hated the movie himself and could not watch a single scene of the movie. He also claimed that there was a different script when he first read it, compared to the one they actually used on a significantly worse set.

Fans disliked the film due to the production significantly altering the appearances and backstories of the characters compared to the games. This included altering the appearance of the Kilrathi, as they lost their fur entirely in the movie compared to the games where they kept it along with their feline features. Considering the huge failure of this movie on every level, fans like to pretend this movie never even existed, let alone wanting another one to be made.

4 Should Be Rebooted: Sonic the Hedgehog - The Movie (1996), As Parts Of The World Of Sonic Just Work Better In Traditional Animation

Sonic The Hedgehog The Movie

Though there was a Sonic The Hedgehog movie released back in 2020 with a sequel on the way, fans might not be as aware that there was an animated film released in 1996 based on Sega's iconic mascot. Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie is technicallytwo-episode Japanese original video animation (OVA) based on the video game franchise and featured Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and a few original characters specifically created for the OVA.

This OVA received mixed reviews; some praised the artwork and the clean special effects but criticized the voice acting (especially for the English dubbed version). With Sonic resurging in fame thanks to the movie released back in 2020 and with the franchise's upcoming 30th anniversary this year, this would make rebooting the animated OVA a great way to commemorate that milestone.

3 Should Not Be Rebooted: Double Dragon (1994) Had Its Campy Moments But There Just Isn't Enough There To Necessitate Another Movie

Double Dragon film

Double Dragon was released in 1994, based on the series of pioneering beat-em-ups. The film took place in a post-apocalyptic (but with '80s and '90s vibes) punk environment after Los Angeles is devastated by an earthquake. Critics and Double Dragon fans alike claimed the movie had badly-acted characters, clumsy pacing, and a too-simplistic storyline.

Despite praise for its special effects and some of the fight scenes, the movie did so poorly in theaters that it earned a rating of 13% on Rotten TomatoesTime Magazine listed the film as one of the worst video game movies in 2009, which is saying something. Considering Double Dragon barely has a story in the first place, there really isn't much there to make another movie out of (which was precisely the problem to begin with).

2 Should Be Rebooted: Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie (1994) Inspired The Street Fighter Alpha Games & Was Surprisingly Mature

Street Fighter II The Animated Movie

While U.S. audiences got a campy live-action film adaptation of Street Fighter, Japanese audiences got the excellent anime Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie. Taking the mostly all-ages game and turning it into a very adult movie, SFII: TAM had blood, cursing, death, and even a shower scene that had to be edited for the initial Western release. But none of it seemed forced or edgy for the sake of edgy, and instead felt like it was acknowledging that not all gamers are children and would appreciate a video game movie made with older fans in mind.

In fact, the movie had such an impact on the franchise that the Street Fighter Alpha series was created using character art inspired by how the fighters looked in the films, and in some cases— such as the more buff Sagat— those new designs would eventually bleed back over into the main SF series. There were anime SF movies and series after this one, but none were as good or felt as "big," and it's about time we get another epic anime movie based on the legendary series.

1 Should Not Be Rebooted: Samurai Shodown - The Motion Picture (1994) Failed Spectacularly & Should Be Left In The Past

samurai shodown

Samurai Shodown: The Motion Picture is a Japanese animated television special based upon the 1993 video game Samurai Shodown (again, released by SNK). The film was originally released in 1994, with an English version hitting the following year.

The movie meant to reenact the events of the video game, but the characters' roles in the movie largely deviated from its source material. This included changing the gender of one of the characters from male to female, and including new characters called the "Seven Holy Warriors," which was never included in any other continuity of the series before. Critics and fans of the games were displeased with the changes overall and the movie performed poorly despite the fact that a game about characters fighting with swords should've been perfect for an anime.
