WARNING: The following contains spoilers for "The Gospel of Josephine," the fifth episode of The 100 Season 6.

The previous episode of The 100 ended with the cliffhanger revelation that the Primes ruling over Sanctum had the spirit of one of their own possess Clarke forcibly through an advanced scientific process using her Nightblood. Clarke had been the second person in the episode to undergo the possession, after a young woman named Delilah similarly underwent the process as part of a religious ceremony allowing her to be possessed by a woman named Priya. The strange behavior has not gone unnoticed, and the other refugees on Earth quickly discover the dark secret of Sanctum's community, while a longtime character decides to betray the others for his own survival.

Unnerved By Delilah's transformation into Priya, Jordan leads the other crew of the Eligius IV to investigate the headquarters of the Primes, the ruling class of Sanctum who are revered by the general community as living gods. Jordan, Bellamy, Murphy and Gaia infiltrate the facility where they find a creepy room full of skeletons. From there, they are joined by a suspicious Clarke who, unbeknownst to the rest of the group, has been completely possessed by a Prime named Josephine. To keep her true identity concealed, Josephine allows the group to explore further into the compound, where they find a lab with archival video revealing the mind-transfer process.

The video is particularly revelatory both for them and us. Featuring older characters from the prologue season's second episode, it's revealed Russell and Gabriel had spent the past 25 years trying to find a way to resurrect those killed by Russell while he was driven into an uncontrollable rage by the Sanctum's eclipsing red sun. Using the blackened blood, dubbed Nightblood by the Eligius IV crew, the video shows the two transfer Josephine, Russell's daughter, into a test subject at the apparent expense of the host body's native consciousness.

Horrified by what they see, Jordan realizes that the woman he had quickly grown to love may be gone forever, forcibly replaced by Priya's mind. Bellamy deduces that anyone with Nightblood is now at risk and that the entire reasons the Primes changed their mind and allowed the Eligius IV crew to remain was after learning Clarke has Nightblood putting her and Madi at risk while the Josephine-possessed Clarke watches the new arrivals begin to learn the truth of this community along with the realization that the skeletons in the antechamber had been previous host bodies in the 200 years since Sanctum had been colonized.

For Murphy, who had briefly died earlier in the season and resuscitated after seeing visions of hell during his time in the afterlife, the Primes' mind-transfer process means the possibility of immortality. Following his resuscitation, Murphy had been shaken to his core by his near-death experience and spent much of the subsequent episodes drinking heavily while contemplating his mortality. This interest in the process and sympathy towards the Primes is especially noticed by Josephine, as the group discreetly exits from the compound.

Josephine spends much of the episode growing accustomed to her new body while avoiding suspicion, to varying degrees of success. Forced to drug and imprison Bellamy after he realizes the truth about what has occurred to Clarke, Josephine realizes she will need someone to help coach her on how to best impersonate Clarke. With that in mind, in the episode's final moments she approaches Murphy and helps him discover her true identity while promising to grant him amnesty and potential immortality if he can assist her. In a shocking turn of events, Murphy appears to agree.

Murphy has always been a character that values his own survival above all else, having been known since the beginning of the series to favor taking the easy way out whenever possible. His potential betrayal of his longtime friends marks perhaps the darkest moment in the character's history, as his near-death experience has led him to go desperate lengths to avoid the visions he had seen. Now, teamed with the Primes, Murphy may have just become the most dangerous character in the entire season.

The 100 airs on The CW Tuesdays at 9 pm ET/PT. The series stars Eliza Taylor, Paige Turco, Marie Avgeropoulos, Bob Morley, Henry Ian Cusick, Lindsey Morgan, Richard Harmon and Tasya Teles.
