WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the FCBD: X-Men by Jonathan Hickman, Tini Howard, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia and VC's Clayton Cowles, available now.

The plot of the 2020 X-Men FCBD issue focuses on Saturnyne as she positions her forces against the mutants who are currently spreading their influence through Otherworld. This includes a tarot reading of the future that hints at many of the events that will soon befall the X-Men and their allies on Krakoa.

Ten specific mutants are shown as the "10 of Swords" card, implicity setting it up as a tease of the upcoming X of Swords event. Each of the mutants is shown wielding a blade: Some of them are supernatural in nature, while others appear to merely just be swords.

Notably, the five in front of the picture are shown in the light and are easy enough to recognize. Meanwhile, the other five sword-wielders are hidden in shadows, suggesting a different role or aspect for them within the story. What does the preview tease about X of Swords and what characters will likely star in the event?

The five mutants in the front of the group are likely being hinted as major players in the event, thus their prominence in the teaser. All five of them have been important members of the X-books since the creation of the Krakoa Nation: Apocalypse (wielding his massive ancient scimitar), Wolverine (holding the Muramasa Blade), Cable (dual-wielding a gun along with the Star-Knight Sword he recovered in Cable), Magik (with her Soul Sword) and Captain Britain (who has created a blade out of her own psychic energy).

Each of these five have taken on major roles in the last year of X-Men comics. Apocalypse has emerged as one of the chief power players on Krakoa, casually commanding a great deal of respect from his former enemies. Cable's connection with the Star-Knight Sword has been teased to attract some of the Star-Knights towards Earth. Captain Britain has been leading Excalibur against Saturnyne and assisting Apocalypse, making her a powerful ally to him. Magik has become a direct lieutenant to Cyclops and has been helping multiple teams thanks to her teleportation powers.

Meanwhile, Wolverine has become one of the most consistent agents of the X-Men, working on multiple missions and positioning himself as the go-to agent for Krakoa.

What's more intriguing is the five characters standing behind them, in shadows. The darkness makes it difficult to tell who these mutants are, but distinctive elements of some may hint at their identities: The billowing robe, long hair and dual swords of the figure on the far left indicate Gorgon, the former villain who has since been accepted on Krakoa. Next to him, with lightning around her, is a female figure. The flowing cape and distinct white hair make it clear this is Storm -- apparently having dealt with the mental bomb within her psyche and using lightning to light up her blade.

Another figure whose cape helps identify them stands between two other figures. His distinct helmet shape identifies him as Magneto -- possibly even weilding the Cerebro Blade that he constructed for Xavier after he was assassinated.

The other two figures are harder to tell, as there are not distinctive elements to their costumes or designs, save one of them wearing a jacket. Neither of them have an instantly recognizable blade, either.

The question remains, why are these five hidden from sight while the other five are shown fully in the light? The prediction from Saturnyne suggests a betrayal and great loss are coming for the X-Men. The shadows could represent who will be lost during the betrayal -- or even tease who might be actually doing the betraying. The only way to find out will be to see how things play out in X of Swords.
