Not all relationships will work in the real world as they do in the land of anime. Some relationships need extra tension to fill out the plot, and some toxic relationships are a result of the characters' convoluted pasts. Fractious friendships that devolve into routine physical squabbles make for funny running gags but would be highly inappropriate in any other setting.

Snarky banter bordering on verbal abuse and extended love triangles may not suit the real world, though they make for entertaining stories. Obsessed fans and stalkers should normally result in legal action rather than marriage. Sometimes in anime, however, anything goes.

10 Inuyasha Doesn't Appreciate Kagome

Inuyasha

Inuyasha's titular character is hung up on his old flame, Kikyo, who betrayed him. He routinely takes his feelings out on the young mortal Kagome, who doesn't deserve his constant criticism. Kagome can hold her own against his censure, but often she's the one who bears the emotional weight of Inuyasha's baggage.

Regardless, when Inuyasha has his moments of tenderness for Kagome, it's satisfying for Inuyasha fans. Ultimately, after Inuyasha undergoes a lot of character development, the two make a sweet couple who were meant to be together.

Castlevania

Castlevania's Alucard and Trevor Belmont are at odds with each other from the very beginning. They both shoulder their own difficult family lineage. Trevor is the heir to the defunct Belmont clan, which was once dedicated to fighting the creatures of darkness, while Alucard is the stylish son of Dracula and his tragic, mortal wife.

Their personalities are in direct contrast to each others. Trevor is a loudmouthed, debauched himbo, and Alucard is emotionally stoic. Though they constantly exchange insults and drive their adventuring partner, Sypha, nuts, they have each other's backs when it counts.

8 Sakura Started Out As A Sasuke-Fangirl

Naruto

Sakura smiling at Sasuke in Naruto

In Naruto, Sakura met her future husband Sasuke at the Academy and immediately started crushing on him. Before she had the opportunity to really know him in-depth as a person, she latched onto rumors about him and attempted to mold herself into someone that she thought he might find attractive.

Sakura changed parts of how she looked and ruined an important friendship all for the sake of her fangirl obsession. This isn't exactly a healthy foundation for any relationship, much less a future marriage. Over time, though, she grows up and becomes a more mature person.

7 Kyo Has An Anger Problem

Fruits Basket

Kyo is comforting a crying Tohru (Fruits Basket)

Though Kyo is one of the more sympathetic characters in Fruits Basket, he has a significant anger problem. His eventual love interest, Tohru, bears the brunt of that anger more than once. There are valid reasons why Kyo struggles socially. He feels inadequate, and he needs to learn how to relate to others productively, but the reasoning behind his issues doesn't excuse his behaviors.

In contrast, Tohru people-pleases to a fault. In real life, this dynamic would be bound for disaster. In the Fruits Basket world, however, there's plenty of room for their mutual growth as characters as they evolve and slowly fall in love with one another.

Sunako, the protagonist of The Wallflower, has high defenses because of a traumatic event with a middle school crush. She doesn't have a firm sense of self and chooses to hide away from others.

Kyohei's mission is to help Sunako embrace fashion and beauty standards. His good looks make Sunako feel as if he is untouchable to her, and that she is unlovable. To protect herself, she tries to scare off Kyohei by threatening to kill him — not exactly the best opening note for their relationship.

Eventually, the two genuinely fall in love, after much-needed character development on Yukako's part. Rather than trying to mold Koichi into her idealized version of him, she eventually comes to admire him as he is.

1 Yui Deserves Better Treatment From The Vampire Boys

Diabolik Lovers

The main characters of Diabolik Lovers

Yui lives with a coven of vampires by force in Diabolik Lovers. She's a naive human and has many vulnerabilities, which the vampires exploit often. She gets passed from vampire to vampire, and they can be rather cruel to her.

Shu drinks Yui's blood without permission, Kanato is obsessive, and Ayato will get into petty arguments with her. Subaru associates Yui with his toxic mother issues, and Laito views Yui as little more than a plaything. The romance is as entertaining as it is unrealistic for real-life relationships.
