If executed properly, plot twists can not only keep one’s existing audience on their toes, but they also manage to attract newer fans to one’s works. However, not everyone takes kindly to plot twists, especially when it involves the death of fan favorite characters. No matter how justified those deaths are or how much they fit into one’s literary style, deaths are usually hated by one and all.

Even so, there are other kinds of plot twists that fans don’t take kindly to, and this article will discuss 10 twists in anime plots that almost made fans riot in the 2010s

10 The Undertaker Is A Villain

Despite being a thriller, Black Butler has a huge female fanbase, mainly because of its extremely gorgeous male characters. Undertaker is the third most popular character from the series, and fans were psyched when the Black Butler movie Book of Atlantic was released.

However, Undertake fans were in for a huge shock as this movie revealed that he had been a villain all along. He had been responsible for re-animating corpses, having innocent people kidnapped and conducting illegal experiments on them, as well as the benefactor of a very dubious cult in England.

9 Akito Turns Out To Be A Girl

Those who watched Fruits Basket for the first time in 2019, grew to have a love-hate relationship with Akito Sohma, a person who is basically a physically abusive and violent asshole. Then suddenly out of nowhere, it was revealed that Akito is actually a girl. She was raised as a boy by her abusive and mentally unstable mother, who didn’t want her husband to interact with any female besides herself, including their own daughter.

Fans were extremely angry at this twist because not only did it come out of no-where, it made zero sense and added nothing to the plot. It seemed more like the series’ creators trying desperately to justify Akito’s inhumane behavior, and it definitely didn’t go down well with fans.

8 Yuno Gasai Was From Another Timeline

Yuno was the most popular character from Future Diaries, hands down. However, even her popularity couldn’t save the anime from its questionable writing and unnecessary plot twists, especially when it was revealed in the last quarter of the anime.

There exist not one, but three worlds (or dimensions), and a lot of hopping between worlds and time traveling happens, enough to leave readers more confused than shocked at the plot twist. It is also revealed that Yuno is dead in one world but alive only in another world, and she keeps traveling back in time (and killing herself) to play the Survival Games in order to keep her Yukiteru.

7 Koro Sensei Did Not Blow Up The Moon

The entire premise of Assassination Classroom hinges around Koro sensei’s threat of blowing up the moon, if his students are unable to stop him. With so much at stake, the students of 3E try their very best to kill their tentacle-y sensei, but none of them ever succeed no matter what they do.

Eventually, upon learning Koro sensei’s sob back story (where he wishes to die), his students try to save him instead. This of course, angered hardcore fans as nothing justified Koro sensei revealing this information towards the middle of the series, instead of the beginning. It seemed more like a plot device to further the plot, instead of an actual emotional bonding moment between sensei and his students.

6 Reiner And Bertholdt Turn Out To Be Titans

The Survey Corps were a symbol of integrity and humanity’s last hope of survival in the show Attack on Titan. Their one and only mission is to keep their city safe from titans, by slaughtering as many of them as they can. This is why it came as a massive shock when it was revealed that not only Reiner and Bertholdt were titans, but they were the Armored and the Colossal titans respectively.

If this news wasn’t shocking enough, what exacerbated its affect on fans was how it was revealed to them - completely out of the blue with no warning or buildup whatsoever.

5 Ryuko And Satsuki Are Long Lost Sisters

Ryuko vs satsuki

One of the best parts of Kill la Kill were the dynamics between its two female characters - student Ryuko Mato, and the student council president Satsuki Kiryuin. A lot of fights happen between the two, with Ryuko trying her best to get rid of a dictatorial president. While one of their most epic battles reaches its peak, it’s revealed by Satsuki that they are sisters, and that they need to work together in order to defeat their evil mother.

What angered fans the most was how Satsuki never really had a strong reason for not revealing this info before to Ryuko, and by extension, the series’ audience.

4 Kanade Has Yuzuru’s Heart – Literally.

Everyone who’s watched Angel Beats knows what an emotional anime it is. However, the constant reveals in the anime soon got tiring for fans. The final reveal about Kanade receiving Yuzuru’s heart during a heart transplant was meant to serve as a closure for fans who intensely shipped this couple.

Yet, it left a bitter taste in the mouths of many because this reveal was not only completely out of the blue, but it created a few plot holes that were never answered. For example, if Kanade got a new heart, how and why did he die so early? If Yuzuru died before Kanade, then why did she arrive later than him in their realm? Where was she during that time?

3 When Subaru Chose Emilia Over Rem

2016 witnessed one of the most intense waifu wars ever – Emilia v/s Rem. While it was made clear that Subaru was head over heels in love with Emilia, she never truly responded to his feelings. However, the ice-cold Rem was able to break down her walls after being charmed by Subaru. When she finally did manage to confess her feelings to him, she was gently rejected by Subaru with the now famous words

“I love Emilia.”

Rem fans rioted, because the entire buildup towards that confession made it seem like Subaru was going to accept Rem’s confession. Till date, the “best Re: Zero waifu” topic lights instantly lights fires to the most civil anime discussions.

2 Mami’s Unexpectedly Gruesome Death

Back in 2011 when Magical Girl Madoka Magica, everyone just assumed it was one among many kawaii magical girl anime series. However, episode 3 shook viewers to their core.

The sweet Mami was fighting off the minions of the evil witch, and after defeating them, she went to the witch’s lair. The audience is led to believe Mami kills her, but then the witch is shown to turn into a huge caterpillar which decapitates her off-guard victim. Mami fans were extremely angered at this unnecessarily gruesome death, but this was just the beginning for the fans of the series.

Magical Girl Madoka Magica is an excellent example of the saying “Never judge a book by its cover”.

1 The Many Deaths Of Mayuri

Moe anime girls bring out the need within oneself to protect them, which is why Mayuri from Steins;Gate was an easy fan favorite. And while the show was no stranger to unexpected and shocking plot twists, Mayuri’s death caught everyone off guard.

She’s destined to die on August of 2010, so Rintaro desperately tries to avoid her deaths. He’s unsuccessful every single time, and even when he does manage to save her in world lines where she can’t be killed by rounders, Mayuri dies of a heart attack. Having to watch their favorite character die not one, but multiple times, made a lot of fans turn hostile towards the series and its creators.
