Kamen Rider is one of Japan's oldest superheroes, with the original series dating back to the late 70's. The first series, created by Shotaro Ishinomori, featured a lone warrior who had been altered by the evil organization Shocker into a powerful cyborg, fighting back against the very people who created him. With his iconic red scarf, transformation pose, and his signature special Rider Kick move, creators have been paying homage to this series for decades.

And that's not just within the world of tokusatsu, but within anime as well. Everyone from the writers and animators to the voice actors grew up watching this popular children's hero, so it's no surprise there are dozens of anime with references to this amazing long-running show.

10 Katopesla Has Form Changes Much Like Modern Kamen Rider (Dragon Ball Super)

Vegeta vs Katopesla

There was no shortage of unique characters in Dragon Ball Super’s Tournament of Power, but there were a few characters who were obvious references as well. Katopesla was a member of Universe 3 and a direct reference to early Kamen Rider characters with his posing and his unique belt. However, Katopesla also referenced modern era Kamen Rider with his ability to Form Change, and his transformation into his battle form briefly allowed him to keep pace with a distracted Vegeta.

9 Wakaba And Macao Did The Kamen Rider Transformation Pose (Fairy Tail)

Fairy Tail Henshin Pose

In episode 222 of Fairy Tail, Lucy decides she wants to learn transformation magic from Mirajane. Natsu and Happy tag along with her, and they all train under her with the intention of learning transformation magic.

While they’re training, Wakaba and Macao decide to train under her as well. In their attempt, they both emulate the poses best known for their use by Kamen Rider Ichigou and Kamen Rider Nigou, which worked because they were meant to “Transform” or Henshin – a phrase often shouted before a Rider transforms.

8 Mashiro Kuna Is A Visored With Her Own Rider Kick (Bleach)

Kuna after being hollowfied

The Visored arrive in the Bleach world and shake up what’s expected of characters design-wise, with none of them being forced to stick to a particular look because they’re already working for the Soul Society. Mashiro Kuna stands out particularly because of her resemblance to classic 1970’s Kamen Rider characters.

She has her long, flowing scarf, and when she enters Vizored mode her mask resembles that of an insect, something that Kamen Rider was long known to reference. If that wasn’t obvious enough, she attacks with largely kicks, even shouting out the attack names.

7 Isao Kondo Became Kamen Roachief Black RX (Gintama)

Gintama Kondo Kamen Roachief Black RX

Gintama has long been known for parodying Japanese anime and otaku culture. That’s part of the show’s charm, after all. There are some gags in the series involving the fact that a member of the Shinsengumi, Sougo Okita, shares a voice actor with Kamen Rider Den-O’s protagonist Momotaros.

Something like that is a common occurrence when a voice actor is responsible for a particularly famous role, but in episode 285, they also have Shinsengumi leader Isao Kondou wear a mask that resembles the helmet of Kamen Rider Black RX, as people call him “Kamen Roachief Black RX.”

6 Yunyun Of The Crimson Demon Clan Introduced Herself With A Rider Transformation Pose (KonoSuba)

KonoSuba YunYun Kamen Rider Pose

KonoSuba is one of the most beloved anime series of the 2010s, balancing meaningful storytelling with incredible comedy moments. The series has made multiple references to the Kamen Rider franchise, but they mostly stick to doing the original Kamen Rider poses.

One of the early season two episodes featured Yunyun of the Crimson Demon Clan, introduce herself to everyone by doing the original Kamen Rider’s pose. Considering many of them are a bunch of NEET-type characters, it’s not surprising to see them mimic poses like this.

5 Garyu Is A Summon That's Strongly Meant To Look Like Classic And New Riders (Nanoha StrikerS)

Nanoha Garyu Resembles Early Kamen Riders

So much of Nanoha has its roots in Tokusatsu and mecha. Nanoha herself is named after the original Gundam in that people refer to her as the White Devil because of the overwhelming power she uses to easily take down so many of her foes.

One of the characters in Nanoha is Garyu, a summon made by Lutecia Alpine. Gayru's humanoid design despite being an insect is meant to resemble a Kamen Rider – especially since he also has a scarf, a signature look for early Kamen Rider.

4 A Version Of Kamen Rider Den-O Appeared As A Parody In Monthly Girls' Nozaki-Kun

Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun Kamen Rider Den-O

Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-kun is a romantic comedy about a young high school student named Chiyo Sakura and her classmate Umetarou Nozaki. Nozaki is a famous shoujo manga artist, and Chiyo works with him as an assistant in hopes that being close to him will give her greater opportunities to fall for him. In one rather comedic scene, they have a character appear that looks exactly like Kamen Rider Den-O... with some mild changes so that it’s not an exact rip-off.

3 Someone Once Rode Kamen Rider Den-O's DenLiner (Hayate the Combat Butler)

Hayate the Combat Butler DenLiner Reference

Hayate the Combat Butler came out when Kamen Rider Den-O was experiencing the most popularity a Rider series had in some time. In episode 16 of Hayate, the cast apparently found themselves onto the DenLiner, the train on which Den-O manages to traverse time itself. In the episode, Den-O’s primary weapon the DenGasher makes appearances in different forms as it’s tossed at one of the characters in the show. Later still in the window of the DenLiner, several main characters from Den-O are visible, including one of the series’ protagonists Momotaros.

2 Space Medafighter X Stole Not Only Medals, But The Pose And Scarf Of Classic Kamen Rider (Medabots)

Space Medafighter X

The classic series Medabots has its own reference to Kamen Rider with the Phantom Renegade. He spends most of the series helping out when he can but also trying to steal Medals. Eventually though he needs to enter the World Robattle Tournament. Instead of being a rip-off of Tuxedo Mask, he becomes Space Medafighter X. It’s not much of a change, swapping his silver mask for a golden one and a red scarf, with him constantly doing poses that are similar to the old-school Kamen Rider characters.

1 Medaka Box Had A Battle Of Old Versus New Kamen Rider Fans

Akane Kouki Heisei Kamen Rider Ryuki

Medaka Box is meant to be satire on shonen manga as a whole, and it’s really a shame the anime didn’t get last as long as it should have. Late in the second season, the group faces off against Koga Itami, who makes their first appearance by doing Kamen Rider Ichigo’s pose, and even going so far as to do the narration from the original Kamen Rider series.

Akane Kouki, the secretary for Medaka’s Student Council, responds by saying he prefers newer Kamen Rider, referencing Kamen Rider Ryuki. Their battle is defined as “new versus old” before Koga performs a Rider Kick that obliterates the ground underneath them and causes the fight to transition to a new arena.
