The good news is that screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick — weren’t we just talking about them? — are bringing their 2009 sleeper hit Zombieland to television as a half-hour comedy, developed by Fox and Sony Pictures Television. The bad news is that the move would deliver two taps to the head of the frequently discussed movie sequel.
The word comes courtesy of Vulture, which indicates the “zom-com” is targeted for the 2012-2013 season, essentially bringing the property full circle. Producer Gavin Polone tells the New York blog that the original plan was for Zombieland to be a TV show, with CBS even ordering a pilot script in 2005. “But they did what networks do,” he said, “which is to take all the good stuff out.”
Following a pit stop at Syfy, which found it too expensive, Zombieland ended up as the Ruben Fleischer-directed feature, which grossed $102 million worldwide and gave a boost to the careers of Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone.
“We always thought [it should be a TV series],” Polone says. “If you watch the movie with that in mind, you will see some remnants of the television show. We have the ‘Zombie Kill of the Week,’ which was always intended to happen every week. The movie ends on a cliffhanger; it doesn’t have a real resolution.”
