Zhang Ziyi (Memoirs of a Geisha) has just landed a franchise-wide role in Legendary’s MonsterVerse, beginning with the sequel to 2014’s Godzilla, titled Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
While much is still unknown regarding Ziyi’s role, she will play a significant role in the covert Monarch organization that was established in the first film. Ziyi, who received award nominations from the Golden Globes, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild for her work in Memoirs of a Geisha, will join a cast that includes Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga. Also part of the cast are Straight out of Compton actor O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Ken Watanabe, who is returning as Dr. Ishiro Serizawa.
Krampus director Michael Dougherty will helm the film from a script he penned alongside his co-writer, Zach Shields (Krampus).
The upcoming sequel is part of the Godzilla-King Kong cinematic universe helmed by Legendary. Thus far, the company has already scheduled a showdown between the two super-species slated to hit theater screens in 2020, and, per Variety’s initial report of Dougherty’s involvement with Godzilla 2, the studio has set up a writers’ room to help craft the highly-anticipated cinematic universe.
Debuting in theaters on May 22, 2019, Godzilla: King of the Monsters is a production Legendary Pictures directed by Michael Dougherty starring Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Vera Farmiga, Thomas Middleditch and Ziyi Zhang.
