Emerald Fennell is excited to script some exciting superhero action sequences in the forthcoming Zatanna movie.

Speaking with Empire for the magazine's British New Wave issue, the Academy Award-winning writer and director of Promising Young Woman and Killing Eve discussed her DC superhero project, which she is still in the early stages of writing. "There are lots of things about her that felt like they could be really, really interesting," Fennell said. "And it'll be an opportunity to make something really quite dark. And that appealed to me, to make something big and scary. I love that stuff."

That bigness holds a major appeal to Fennell, whose previous work had to fit within the constraints of television or indie film budgets. "The scale of [these movies] is so massive and so thrilling," she said. "Like, why wouldn't you want to write something like that when you can write huge, massive, crazy sequences and fights? Normally you're like, how can I show this in the smallest cheapest way [laughs]? To have complete freedom to really let your imagination run wild is such a joy."

Fennell, who does not know whether she'll be directing the Zatanna screenplay or not, has previously promised that her take on DC's Zatanna will be "scary and intense." It's also rumored that the film, produced by J.J. Abrams' production company Bad Robot, will tie into Abrams' Justice League Dark series for HBO Max.
