It's time to kick the tires and light the fires, because Val Kilmer has been offered a role in the long-discussed sequel to "Top Gun."

"[N]ot often you get to say 'yes' without reading the script," Kilmer, who played Iceman in the 1986 blockbuster, wrote on Facebook, adding, "Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise!!! 'Yes.' We will all miss Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I've ever met in the film biz, but let's fire up some fighter jets again!!! This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role."

That's presumably a further sign that Cruise is on board to reprise his role as Marverick. The actor said in July that returning for the sequel "would be fun," but only if actual jets are used, as with the original. Skydance's David Ellison has said there's an "amazing" role for Cruise, but insisted "there is no 'Top Gun' without Maverick."

The sequel is said to focus on drone technology and the possible end of the era of fighter pilots.
