Comic book fans know Geof Darrow’s stylized, hyper-detailed art from “Hard Boiled,” “The Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot” and “Shaolin Cowboy,” the latter of which is set to return for a new volume in April from Dark Horse Comics. And with that new series comes the opportunity for readers to win a piece of original art by Darrow — as long as he likes what you have to say about his comic. No pressure, right?
If you’ve read the previous most recent “Shaolin Cowboy” series, 2013’s “Shemp Buffet,” and have something to say about it, Dark Horse has extended the invitation for fans to write a letter to firstname.lastname@example.org, and you’ll get the chance to win original art illustrated by Darrow (the above image is previously released “Shaolin Cowboy” art, not associated with the prize). The catch is, he selects the winner, solely based on his own, personal preferences — with no more criteria given beyond that.
Whoever wins the contest can ask whichever of Darrow’s characters you’d like him to draw and specify what they’re doing in the drawing, within the bounds of good taste (other trademarked characters are off limits, natch).
“Shaolin Cowboy: Who’ll Stop the Reign?” #1 is scheduled for release on April 19. And even if you don’t end up winning the original art, take solace in the fact that you’ll be doing your part to pay homage to the great, lost art of the comic book letter column.
