X-Men’s Michael Fassbender Unsure of His Franchise Future

After starring as Magneto in three “X-Men” films, Michael Fassbender reveals he’s uncertain about his future with the Fox franchise.

“I don’t know, to be honest,” he told The Empire Film Podcast while promoting his latest project, “Assassin’s Creed.” “I haven’t made any sort of decision on it because I have no idea what’s happening next with the franchise, to be honest.”

Fassbender debuted as as a young Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto in Fox’s 2011 “soft” reboot “X-Men: First Class,” a role he reprised in the sequels, 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” and this year’s “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

His comments come after a report that the studio is considering an “X-Men” reboot, with franchise producer Simon Kinberg hired to forge the new path. Bryan Singer, who directed 2000’s “X-Men” and 2003’s “X2,” and then returned to steer “Days of Future Past” and “Apocalypse,” is apparently out. Although stars Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult have completed their three-picture contracts, Kinberg is said to be writing a script with them in mind.

It’s of course unknown whether Fassbender truly doesn’t know what the plans are for the franchise, or he’s simply being diplomatic. Whichever is the case, he’s far more polite than Lawrence, who recently made it clear she has little interest in appearing in another “X-Men” movie. Asked during an interview with her “Passengers” co-star Chris Pratt whether she’d like to have a cameo in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” the Oscar winner replied, “Oh, my God, I would love to. I actually don’t even know — I would choose that over doing another X-Men movie. I won’t be Mystique in the X-Men movies, but I would love to be Mystique in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ I wonder if I can do that?”

A potential reboot aside, Fox still has plenty of X-Men projects on its plate, with Hugh Jackman making his final appearance as Wolverine in “Logan,” debuting March 3, and “Deadpool 2” and Josh Boone’s “New Mutants” going into production next year.

Now in theaters, “Assassin’s Creed” also stars Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling and Michael K. Williams.
