Young versions of classic X-Men characters like Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Storm and Jean Grey will all return to the big screen in the 1980s-set "X-Men: Apocalypse." The film takes place chronologically before the very first X-Men films, and in a splinter timeline to boot. But that doesn't mean that Famke Janssen, who played Jean Grey in the first trilogy of X-Men films from 2000 to 2006, wants to be done with the character. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Janssen discussed her take on seeing a young Jean Grey and expressed her desire to return to the role.

"She emailed me before she started filming wanting some pointers," said Janssen of Sophie Turner, the actress playing Jean Grey in "X-Men: Apocalypse." "And I said, 'You don't need any. You're perfect. You're great.' So I can't wait to see the movie and what she's done with it."

She then said she's "really excited about" watching a young version of Jean Grey. "And its not the first time obviously that it's happened," she continued. "In the X-Men series, they've been doing this for years. Although women, it's interesting because they're replaced, and the older versions -- or more mature, whatever the politically correct version of that is -- are never to be seen again. Whereas the men are allowed to be both ages. Sexism. I think that I should be back along with my younger version and the way that we've seen it with Magneto and Professor X."

Janssen is referencing 2014's "X-Men: Days of Future Past," which saw both Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart get significant roles in the same film as their younger counterparts, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy. Janssen did appear in "Days of Future Past," albeit in a brief coda scene at the tail end of the movie. This year's "X-Men: Apocalypse" marks the debut of the younger Jean Grey, as played by Sophie Turner.

Janssen added that she has pitched to producers the idea of playing Jean Grey in a film alongside Turner's new take on the character. "Yes, I have. I have not heard any feedback on that, other than total radio silence," she said.

Sophie Turner debuts as Jean Grey in "X-Men: Apocalypse" on May 27. You can hear Janssen's entire interview below.
