Channing Tatum has already made his interest in the superhero genre quite clear: He wants to play Gambit, the X-Men’s resident Cajun mutant.
“Gambit’s my favorite,” the actor said during a press conference for White House Down. “I’m from New Orleans, around that area. My dad’s from New Orleans, and I like to do a Cajun accent. I could do it for real.”
But how “for real” are the chances of Tatum playing Gambit? After all, the character was portrayed by Taylor Kitsch in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, even if the performance wasn’t exactly universally loved. At the end of the day, the people Tatum really has to convince are the Fox executives and the producers behind the X-Men films — and he has at least one powerful voice on his side.
“I’m dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum,” longtime X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner told Empire. “That doesn’t have to be a great big movie. It’s a thief in New Orleans, it’s a whole different story. He’s on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He’s such a sweetheart.”
With Shuler Donner on his side, will Tatum get the Gambit movie he’s hoping for? And will fans get behind that vision, after the character already appeared in the (admittedly complicated) X-Men movie continuity? We’ll find out in due time.
