In last year’s House of X, Professor Xavier established a new home for the X-Men on the living island of Krakoa. He then issued a mental invitation to all mutants to join him and his team on the island, which eventually became the first nation of mutants. Heroes and villains alike have flocked to the island, putting aside their differences in order to adhere to Xavier’s slightly altered dream of mutants living in harmony. The general consensus of the mutants is that mankind is a perpetual threat and as such, only mutants are allowed on Krakoa.

Although there have been a few hiccups along the way (most notably the assassination of Professor X and an attack by the alien Brood), Krakoa has served as a safe haven for mutants and many view the island as a paradise.

Still, there are a few mutants who for their own reasons have not accepted the professor’s proposal.

Pete Wisdom

An image of Mi-13 agent Pete Wisdom during the Revolutionary War.

Pete Wisdom is a mutant with the ability to absorb heat and solar radiation and project the energy from his fingertips in a variety of forms. A citizen of Britain and a member of British Intelligence agency MI-13, Wisdom has worked with Excalibur and once had a romantic relationship with Kitty Pryde. Although continues to work with the latest incarnation of Excalibur, Wisdom has thus far chosen to remain a British citizen and continues to serve as a liaison between the new Captain Britain and the British government.

Maverick / Agent Zero

Formerly a part of the Weapon X program that played a large part in the creation of Wolverine, Maverick was born with the ability to absorb kinetic energy and release it as energy blasts. He was also artificially granted a healing factor and the ability to emit a corrosive agent in his blasts that negates the healing factors of others. Last seen working under the mercenary guise of Agent Zero, he was commissioned by an unknown party to take down Doctor Doom after losing his powers in the "Decimation" event. Although the X-Men have produced a rather brutal method of restoring the abilities of depowered mutants, Maverick / Zero has yet to come to them for assistance.

Madelyne Pryor / Goblin Queen

Madelyne Pryor controls Limbo demons in X-Men Inferno

Of all the mutants who have refused the invitation to live on Krakoa, Madelyne’s reasons are perhaps the most understandable. Created by Mister Sinister as a clone of Jean Grey to win the affections of Cyclops after Jean’s apparent death, Madelyne was tossed aside by both her creator and husband when Jean turned up alive. Upon learning of her true origins, Madelyne aligned herself with demons that helped her tap into her powers and became the Goblin Queen. Operating as the Goblin Queen, Madelyne has taken possession of one of Sinister’s breeding labs and captured several members of his original team of Marauders, who also have not joined the mutants of Krakoa.

Cannonball

Cannonball blasting Cropped

A former member of the X-Men and team leader of the New Mutants, Cannonball has the ability to blast himself through the air in a field of energy, hence his codename. Cannonball declined the invitation to Krakoa for the noble cause of being a family man. He currently lives in the Shi’ar Empire with his wife, Smasher (a member of the Imperial Guard), and their infant child.

Molly Hayes

Molly Hayes

One of the strongest women in the Marvel Universe, Molly Hayes is an original member of the Runaways and has continued to be a part of that team despite Xavier’s invitation. She has met several of the X-Men previously and ended up getting in an argument with Wolverine that resulted in her throwing him through a roof, and later she met up with Beast before punching him and running away. Her prior interactions with the X-Men perhaps provide some context behind her decision to remain with her team instead of going to Krakoa, at least until Wolverine and Pixie pay her a visit in Runaways #34.

Namor

No mutant on Earth has rejected Xavier’s invitation more famously than the powerful Prince Namor. Possessing super-strength, the ability to survive underwater indefinitely and the ability to fly, the former Avenger and X-Man commended Xavier for realizing his place in the world before informing him he did not need the professor to remind him he was superior, as he was already well aware. He then arrogantly welcomed the professor to return when he was more serious about accepting mutants as the rightful rulers of humanity.

Of course, not being on Krakoa for the moment doesn’t mean the situation isn’t likely to change. Once the Goblin Queen has been dealt with, there is the possibility her captives (Harpoon, Prism, Blockbuster and Vertigo) will eventually live on Krakoa. And with Magneto and Apocalypse serving on the Quiet Council, Namor’s requirement mutants understand their place in the world has been met, especially with Magneto’s declaration that humanity has “new gods.”
