Emmy winner Peter Dinklage has join the rapidly expanding cast of Fox's X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer announced.

Although it wasn't revealed which role the Game of Thrones star will be playing, online speculation immediately turned to Puck, the Alpha Flight member and former soldier of fortune who trapped the spirit of a centuries-old evil spirit within his own body, a process that reduced him to 3 feet 6 inches in height.

However, that seems unlikely, not to mention narrow. While Singer & Co. are clearly deviating from the original Marvel Comics storyline by Chris Claremont and John Byrne -- for instance, the time periods and team rosters are different -- it would be odd to add a character outside of the core X-Men "family" to an already sprawling cast. What's more, there's nothing that says Dinklage has to play "the dwarf character." Why not Senator Kelly (portrayed in 2000's X-Men by Bruce Davison), or whichever public figure whose death in this version of the story puts mutants, and mankind, on the path to a dystopian future?

The sequel to 2011's X-Men: First Class features returning stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Holt and Jennifer Lawrence, joined by original X-Men trilogy cast members Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin, Ellen Page and Shawn Ashmore. X-Men: Days of Future Past opens July 18, 2014.

Update (12:12 p.m.): Variety reports sources contend Dinklage will play the main antagonist, which certainly rules out Puck.
