Wonder Woman Movie Inspired By Donner’s Superman

Sitting at 27% on Rotten Tomatoes, “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” was criticized for its grim nature with reviewers saying it is a “tiresome, ill-tempered film,” that it could use a “comic touch” and will make you wonder if the “sun will ever come out again.” Fans were more optimistic as usual, giving it a 67%, but that hasn’t stopped the production team for “Wonder Woman” from setting up very different expectations for the upcoming film.

The president of DC Entertainment and director for the Wonder Woman film both told Variety that the amazonian’s adaptation will be significantly dissimilar to the “Batman v Superman” film as well as “Suicide Squad”. The director, Patty Jenkins, points to the 1978 “Superman” film directed by Richard Donner as her inspiration for Wonder Woman’s direction. “It was about you watching and realizing what it would feel like to have great powers and do great things. It was full of love and emotion,” she says.

“There’s a misconception that DC or [parent studio] Warner Bros. has made a conscious decision for all our movies to be darker or edgier,” said Diane Nelson, president of DC Entertainment. “That’s not the case. Fans of the DC universe know that there are characters, like Batman, who are darker, but there are others like Wonder Woman, who are hopeful, optimistic leaders, and the tone of this film represents that.”

Jim Lee, DC Comics publisher, also chimed in on the film’s direction. “Fans who have been reading ‘Wonder Woman’ for decades will be really blown away by how [the film] synthesizes the origins and brings her into the modern era.”

“Wonder Woman” is directed by Patty Jenkins and stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Robin Wright, Connie Nielsen, and Florence Kasumba. The film arrives in theaters June 2nd, 2017.
