Wonder Woman Sequel Could Head to the ‘80s, See Chris Pine’s Return

According to a new report, the Wonder Woman sequel will take place in the 1980s and star Chris Pine in some capacity.

The Princess of Themyscira may just be headed to the era of big hair and leg warmers. According to a new report from ScreenRant, the Wonder Woman sequel will take place in the 1980s. What's more, Chris Pine -- who played Steve Trevor in the first film -- will return in some capacity.

The report elaborates on the setting, explaining that the time period will allow Diana to face the Soviet Union in the final days of the Cold War. Further, DC Entertainment President and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns is said to be developing the script with Patty Jenkins, who directed the first film. Though Jenkins isn't yet confirmed to direct the Wonder Woman sequel, she is currently in talks for the film and it seems very likely that she will return. The rest of the production team is also expected to stay on board for the sequel.

According to the report, Pine will reprise his role as Steve Trevor in the Wonder Woman sequel, despite the fact that Trevor died at the climax of the first film. It is unclear how the film will bring him back at this time, though it is possible that Pine could appear in flashbacks, visions or perhaps as the original Steve Trevor's distant relative.

Wonder Woman has been a resounding success for Warner Bros. and DC Films. The film took in another $10.1 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $368 million; with $377 million internationally, Wonder Woman now sits at $745 million at the worldwide box office. The latest DC Extended Universe installment is currently the tenth largest superhero release domestically of all-time, just one of the many titles earned by the film since its release in June. Director Patty Jenkins earned the honor of having the biggest opening weekend for a film directed by a female director, while the film has officially become the top-grossing live-action film directed by a woman. Even more impressive? Wonder Woman is now the DC Extended Universe’s top film domestically. As such, it certainly makes sense for WB to pursue another Wonder Woman film with the same team.
