In Drawing Crazy Patterns, I spotlight at least five scenes/moments from within comic book stories that fit under a specific theme (basically, stuff that happens frequently in comics).

Today, we're looking at characters bursting out of liquid and giving a triumphant snarl.

Our first example is the original, from "X-Men" #132 by John Byrne, Chris Claremont and Terry Austin. The X-Men had just take on the Hellfire Club and Wolverine was seemingly killed. The remaining X-Men were captured and things looked bleak. However, at the end of the issue, Wolverine reveals that he somehow survived and he is in the sewers underneath the Hellfire Club and he is going to fight his way back and save his friends (which he does the next issue, where he kills a bunch of Hellfire Club guards who are then retroactively revealed to have somehow survived and are cyborgs now. They ultimately become the Reavers. This part of an editorial edict where Wolverine could not be a killer)....

Many moons later, in the pages of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's "Astonishing X-Men," Emma Frost has seemingly reunited with her old pals in the Hellfire Club and have attacked her new X-Men teammates, including Kitty Pryde. However, after Kitty was phased way below the X-Mansion, she managed to recover and show up in a little tunnel and manage to evoke her old mentor...

During the "Avengers vs. X-Men" crossover, the Avengers Academy folks had Sebastian Shaw under wraps. At the end of "Avengers Academy" #29 (by Christos Gage, Tom Grummett and Cory Hamscher), however, Shaw escaped from his cell and entered the sewers below Avenger Academy...

In "Groot" #4 (by Jeff Loveness and Brian Kesinger), Groot had led a ragtag team of aliens on a rescue mission, but Groot was badly damaged in a fire and was seemingly killed. The end of the issue, though, explained that you shouldn't count your destroyed Groots before they're fully destroyed!

Finally, in "All-New Wolverine" #9 (by Tom Taylor and Marcio Takara), the new Wolverine (Laura Kinney) teamed up with Old Man Logan to fight against Fin Fang Foom, and Laura had to go into Fin Fang Foom's belly to save Logan. While in the bile, she re-enacted the famous pose...

By the way, seven issues earlier, David Lopez did a cool variant cover featuring Laura also in the famous pose...
