Wolverine is the best there is at what he does, and what he does is often pretty bloody. This has always made his dealings with many of the Marvel Universe's more heroic denizens a bit contentious, as killing is a no-no for most of them. He's become more accepted by the superhero community in recent years but even then, Wolverine as a traditional superhero feels weird, as he's much better at black ops.

There are plenty of other superheroes out there who specialize in superheroic black ops but the argument can be made that Wolverine is the best.

10 He's An Infiltration Specialist

Marvel Comics' Wolverine in a berserker rage

Wolverine spent a lot of his pre-superhero years as a soldier and got rather good at a lot of aspects of warcraft. One of the things he got very good at is infiltration. In a lot of ways, he's tailor-made for it. To begin with, he's a smaller person, which makes him hard to spot and gives him less of a target profile. His enhanced senses allow him to figure out where people he needs to avoid are, helping him escape detection.

He knows how to outfox a variety of high-tech surveillance systems, even sneaking into superhero headquarters like Four Freedoms Plaza when the Fantastic Four were based there. All of this adds up to make him one of the infiltrators around.

9 He Spent The Entire Cold War Working Black Ops With Team X

Wolverine has some competition when it comes to long-lived black ops specialist heroes, but few of them have the continuous experience he does. Black Widow and Winter Soldier come close, but he's worked longer than both of them. In fact, he spent the entirety of the Cold War working for the CIA as a member of Team X, alongside Sabretooth and Maverick.

Team X was the West's premiere black ops team, able to get into anywhere and fulfill their missions. Wolverine spent decades with the group, all of that experience adding up to make him one of the world's longest-serving black ops operators.

8 He's Proficient With Multiple Types Of Weaponry

Wolverine is mostly known for his claws and katanas, but those aren't close to all the weapons he's good with. He's great with multiple types of melee weapons and used firearms pretty exclusively during his Team X days, before he knew about his claws. He also knows how to use many types of explosive ordinances and improvise them when he has to.

Wolverine can use any weapon a mission calls for. If it needs to be quiet, he can do quiet. If it needs to be loud, then he can do that too. He's highly adaptable to any type of offensive situation, which is what black ops call for.

7 He Has No Problem Killing

Wolverine Kills Sabretooth

Wolverine has killed a lot of people. It's one thing that has set him apart from many superheroes and with his claws, he's seemingly been made to kill. It's even the reason he was brought on to the Avengers, as Iron Man realized that the time may arise that the team would need someone like Wolverine. Black ops aren't exactly friendly and one needs to be ready to do what needs to be done.

Wolverine is always ready to kill. In his mind, he's the best one suited for it, as he's been doing it for a very long time and if he does it, no one else has to. It's one of the things that makes him the perfect black ops hero, as he'll get the job done no matter what it is.

6 Weapon X Made Him The Perfect Killing Machine

The Weapon X Program was all about creating the best-superpowered soldiers known to man. Of its many alums, none have been as successful as Wolverine and he's become the poster boy for how good they were at their admittedly despicable job. Wolverine was already a proficient soldier before he entered the project. He came out as the perfect killing machine.

Wolverine's adamantium bonded bones and claws made it so he could not only take a massive amount of damage but also deal it out, cutting through anything in his way. It increased his efficacy a hundredfold.

5 His X-Force Is All About Superhero Black Ops

The Utopia era of the X-Men saw them at their most vulnerable, trying to keep the last few mutants alive in a world that was out to get them. Cyclops decided to revive X-Force, using the team as a black ops group that would eliminate threats before they could attack mutants. He put Wolverine in charge and the deadliest incarnation of X-Force was born.

Wolverine's X-Force dealt with multiple threats to mutantkind with extreme prejudice, the diminutive mutant proving to be an excellent field leader. When the mutant nation of Krakoa was established, Wolverine became a part of X-Force again, working behind the scenes to keep the nascent country going.

4 He's Worked With S.H.I.E.L.D. For Years

S.H.I.E.L.D. is the premiere spy agency of the Marvel Universe. Any hero working with black ops has worked with the group and Wolverine is no different. While he's not an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., he's worked with them on multiple occasions and has known Nick Fury for decades, first fighting alongside him since WWII.

Any Marvel black ops hero worth their salt needs S.H.I.E.L.D. experience and Wolverine has that in spades. There are literal agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with less experience with the organization than him, and he's known Nick Fury longer than just about anyone but Dum Dum Duggan and Captain America.

3 His Healing Factor & Adamantium Skeleton Make Him Just About Unstoppable

Black ops are all about not getting caught, but accidents happen. When they do, the ability to take a lot of damage is very important and that's where Wolverine's the best of the best. He has one of the most powerful healing factors in the Marvel Universe and it's only gotten better over the years. That combined with his adamantium skeleton allows him to tank attacks from just about anyone.

Superhero black ops are different from regular black ops, so being able to take the extra damage is crucial. Wolverine takes a licking and keeps on ticking like few others and can survive anything from a room full of gunmen to the most powerful mutant terrorists imaginable.

2 He's A Ninja

Wolverine is a master of many martial arts. He's trained with masters from around the world but has a specialization in Japanese martial arts, especially ninjutsu. Ninja are some of the greatest assassins in the world, trained in stealth and silent methods of taking out targets, lethally and non-lethally. Wolverine studied their methods for decades and has incorporated them expertly.

Wolverine can sneak with some of the best of them. He's been able to get the drop on many foes over the years and his mastery of silent methods of killing has made him a legend in the black ops community.

1 He's The Total Black Ops Package

Wolverine is one of the most dangerous mutants on Earth and that's why he's such a great black ops superhero. He can do it all and do it better than anyone. He's fast, strong, and skilled. He knows how to sneak and can use any weapon he finds. He has the necessary experience and he has no qualms doing whatever is asked of him.

No other black ops superhero has the combination of skill, experience, and durability that Wolverine has. He can go on any mission imaginable and come through the other side with it accomplished, something few can boast.
