Captain Kirk himself is headed to New York City. William Shatner, who played Kirk in "Star Trek: The Original Series," will appear at "Star Trek: Mission New York" to celebrate the show's 50th anniversary with fans.

Last month, CBS Consumer Products and ReedPOP announced “Star Trek: Mission New York,” a new fan event that will launch just in time to celebrate the franchise’s 50th year anniversary. The event will take place at the Javits Center in New York from September 2-4 and feature interactive exhibits, exclusive merchandise, celebrity guests, panels, screenings and more. More about hotel information, guests and exhibitors will soon be revealed on the event’s official website. Tickets for the event are now on sale.

“Star Trek: Mission New York” isn’t the only exciting news for the franchise. In addition to the upcoming “Star Trek Beyond” film, CBS has announced a new “Star Trek” seriesfor January 2017. Alex Kurtzman, who worked on both 2009’s “Star Trek” reboot film and its 2013 sequel “Star Trek Into Darkness,” will executive produce the series. This would be the first Star Trek TV series since “Star Trek: Enterprise,” which ran from 2001 to 2005 on the now-defunct UPN network.
