Veteran actor William Fichtner will play a lead role in director Roland Emmerich’s "Independence Day 2."

Although details are slim, Deadline reports the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" actor has been cast as "a top general," a role that will grow larger in the two planned sequels.

Fichtner's long list of film credits includes "Armageddon," "Black Hawk Down," "The Longest Yard" and "The Lone Ranger." He's also well known for his television roles on "Invasion," "Prison Break" and "Entourage." He'll reprise his "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" role in the sequel, "Half Shell," which is now filming.

He joins an "Independence Day 2" cast that includes franchise veterans Vivica A. Fox, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch and Brent Spiner, as well as franchise newcomers essie Usher, Liam Hemsworth, Sela Ward, Maika Monroe, Joey King, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Travis Tope, DeObia Oparei and Garrett Wareing.

“Independence Day 2″ opens June 24, 2016.
